Sunken Chest/ Pectus Excavatum

Does anyone have experience with their child having a sunken chest? I asked this question in the April board and they told me if it is really bad they do surgeries when they are teenagers, if it affects their quality of life they do it earlier.

My husband has a mild case of it, you can fit a fist in it about an inch at the deepest part, both of his brothers have it, but the youngest one has a real severe case where it affects his movements and abilities for sports. MIL has told me when my son was born that the one my youngest BIL has was about as big as my son's, so it has got me worried. It is also growing as he grows, of course... but it worries me. She didn't get the surgery for any of them because she thought it was way too dangerous. My husband said if his breathing becomes a problem then we can look into it, but it seems very dangerous just for cosmetic reasons.

So what would you do?

This is what it looks like when he is laying down, it is much more dramatic when he is sitting up.

  • My LO has it too! At his 4 mo appt last week the pedi said if it doesn't correct itself, they might recommend surgery. :( I am sooooooo hoping it will correct itself because I really really really don't want to do surgery!

  • My son has this, it looks much more pronounced than your son's. He's 3 and our doctors have never really said much about it? My husband has it too and it hasn't affected him, maybe there are different severities?

There are, like I said my husband and his two brothers all have it and my husband is least severe while his youngest brother has the most severe, where it alters the way he functions.

To the PP, I do not want the surgery either.

  • Huh, my ex boyfriend had that, and I had no idea it even had a name.

No advice, but it must not have been an issue for him, since he never had it corrected!

  • DS does not have this, but my dad and half-brother both do. Neither one of them had any surgery to correct it and haven't had any issues stemming from it. I guess there are varying degrees of it, so it would all depend on whether its affecting physical functions.

  • I have this and grew up with just a few symptoms -- getting winded easily when exercising/playing sports and frequent hiccups.  Neither of which have hurt my quality of life.  My case isn't sever, but it does give me some pretty impressive cleavage.  :)
