Food

Is anyone still only doing purees?

DD just turned 10 months on the 14th and she still only gets pureed baby food. She was 6 weeks early and weighs about 14 lbs so on the small side.  I asked the pedi at her 9 month appointment and she said her weight is good and that as long as DD was eating enough not to worry about any sort of table food yet. Well, she eats a lot but every time I try to give her puffs or some of the chunkier baby foods (stage 3 with pasta etc) she gags and projectile vomits. I mean , exorcist style , everything she has eaten recently comes back up. It makes me not even want to try other things since she does so well with purees and breastmilk. I don't really know how to proceed. I don't want her not getting enough to eat because she vomits it all back up....but I don't want to wait TOO long if there is a such thing to introduce other foods. Also, we have faced some developmental challenges(i.e. at 10 months she can kinda sorta sit by herself but that is it. no crawling/pulling up etc) which she is making progress with so maybe I should just give her some more time before trying other things?

Any advice? When does it become a problem that they are not eating table food?

Re: Food

  • I've always heard "food before 1 is just for fun". If you're still BFing, she's getting all she needs from your BM.

alot of people go by this. so if your pedi isnt concerned i wouldnt be either. DS eats everything..he will take a squeezer on the go...but otherwise doesnt really do purees. Maybe try doing a version of BLW where like you put food on her tray (very soft steamed carrots or peas which are super tiny ) and see what she does with it. I would keep trying to introduce very very tiny pieces.
  • My DS only eats purées, once a day, and is 22 pounds (and really short,so he is a chunker). He can't eat stage 3 or puffs, they contain rice, which he is allergic too. Plus, he has 2 teeth, so we are sticking with purées for a while.
  • E is starting to get more chunks.  He had the over exaggerated gag reflex FOREVER and he would projectile vomit like you described if he got chunks too.  He's finally starting to get past that.  But he's still only got four teeth so we've been careful about what kinds of chunks we give him.  Like we tried a touch of egg yesterday but he really struggled to chew and swallow it, so I'm thinking we'll hold off a bit longer on those again.

  • We are in the same boat, but going to feeding therapy because DS won't self feed yet and has major issues chewing soft chunks. It's probably overkill on our side. DS is losing weight, so we sort of freaked out. He's had weight issues all along, so at least this therapist will teach him how to chew and swallow. He does well on purées but can't figure anything else out!
