DS has to get tubes...AGAIN

Not looking for a particular response…just kind of talking out loud here. DS got tubes in Dec 2011. They did wonders for him (I wont get into all of the details, but it helped his balance and speech within 24 hours! MAGIC TUBES!) For the past [almost] 2 months, I have noticed he hasn't been "listening".....wasn't sure if it was just him being 3 or if there were real issues. After some at home investigating/testing on my own, I decided to skip the pediatrician and made an appt with his ENT. Turns out he has congenital hearing loss - mild in one ear and moderate in the other. Luckily it’s not his permanent hearing and it is just ton of fluid in both ears. Of course my hormones have been a train wreck lately, and I automatically started bawling before I knew all of the details. As soon as they said “hearing loss” I lost it. He has never complained of his ears bothering him though – other than the past few weeks grabbing his ears and yelling “What?? Talk louder!” dead giveaway that something was wrong, right! So, he has to in Jan 7th for tubes. As soon as we are done with that, he has to go to a Pediatric GI specialist because his reflux is getting so bad. It’s hard to even talk face to face with him sometimes bc of the vomit/acidic smell from his mouth. Poor Kid. Needless to say…he has been one cranky kid lately. But can you blame him? Hopefully all of this stuff will help him get back to his happy self!

Re: DS has to get tubes...AGAIN

  • Honestly, as an adult with a permanent tube in my left ear, DO IT DO IT DO IT. It seriously is life changing to not have the pressure issues and hearing problems. I didn't do it until i was an adult, and it honestly changed my life, not even kidding. I would have multiple ear infections and months of weird popping/sound problems. When my last tube fell out, I just scheduled the surgery for the next one...I didn't even wait to see how I'd do without it- and I was miserable within 3 days. I have no idea how I put up with that shit for so long.

So basically....I know it sucks, but he will feel SO much better when you do it. Ask your ENT about a T-tube if he doesn't seen to be outgrowing the problem. It's got 2 little arms that hold it behind your ear drum. My last one stayed in for 5 years!

  • Also, try a chiropractor. Even our ped will send us there first when it comes to chronic ear infections. It may not do much or anything with such severe issues but you never know. I read an article a few months back that seriously recommended chiropractic adjustments before antibiotics/tubes. I swear I'm not as crunchy as I sound on this board sometimes lol! Hopefully all will be well come January! I remember how uncomfortable it was as a kid :(

  • He has been to a chiro before - for bowel issues when he was around 1 year old. Helped his balance too! I kind of forgot about it for the ears though. I may see about getting him seen a few times before his tubes appt.

Definitely doesn't hurt to try! DD loves seeing the chiro. Even when it's my appt she checks her out, massages her little neck, and it certainly helped with our reflux issue temporarily.

  • Ugh, I'm sorry, it's no fun when there's something wrong with your kid. I hope you can find some relief with his reflux and I hope the tubes help out.

  • Aww, poor little guy and mama!  DS had tubes too and I was so worried that when they fell out he would need them again, but as much as they helped him I'd totally do it again too.  I hope he feels better and that he has a nice smooth surgery!

  • Do it! When DD was 18 months, she wasn't talking...at all. Said like, 3 words and her pediatrician wanted her in speech therapy. She also had to get tubes because of chronic ear infections. After we got home from the hospital, she woke up from her nap and started talking. The next week at the dr, she no longer had to go to therapy-she had exceeded age expectations for speech. I swear by those tubes! DD also had a GI doctor..and a colonoscopy and endoscopy at 2.5
Good luck to him! It's scary but all worth it in the end.

DS also had ST. His therapist said he was her miracle kid. She had never seen tubes make such a quick and great change. What GI problems did/does you DD have?
