Questions for Exclusive Pumpers

Okay, so I EP and have some questions. First, I a trying to minimize the time spent on the pump for each session. I currently get best results with 30 minutes but long term it seems I can do better. Are there ways to speed up my letdown so that I can get a session done in 15-20 minutes? I've tried massage before and after and LO is normally with me for moral support. Next, my left boob creates more than my right. My LC mentioned that this was common, but I am curious about how much of a difference I could expect. Currently my right only produces a third of what my left outputs. Seems like a lot to me. I am not officially working with the LC any longer since her specialty is BF'ing not EP'ing so I thought I'd start here with questions. Thanks!

Re: Questions for Exclusive Pumpers

  • I know it is normal for one to produce more. My left produces about an oz more each time. As far as time, Im not sure. I've heard you should pump 20 mins max...not sure why. I have the opposite problem, mine stops after about 10 minutes but I leave it going for at least 15 to encourage more (low supply).

  • I have the same problem. I have to pump 30 minutes. If I stopped at 20 mins I would only have half of what I get and there is still more coming out so it's impossible for me to stop at 20. I've tried pushing the little button that speeds it up but that doesn't really do much. And as far as one breast producing more I used to have that problem. I started massaging and doing compressions on the one that makes less and after a couple weeks of that it seems to be making about the same amount as the other one. I still do compressions and massage but not as much (when I started I did them the whole time, now I just do them intermittently throughout the session).

  • Maybe try a hand pump? My medela hand pump is great (about $40) and for some people they can get more or the same in less time varying pump strokes. Plus super super portable when you need it.

Also shoulder rolls before you pump and as letdown happens could help trigger it quicker after a few times. Good luck!

An electric double pump will solve your problems. Takes half the time, each causes the second to come down too. It empties the breast to encourage production of more milk. Takes the "burden" out of pumping since the whole thing takes 10 minutes.

I recommend Medela - pick a great bag since they're it's so easy to pump anywhere - If you really want to pump, this is the best money spent

This site has a good selection of all double electric pumps https://bit.ly/19RNYuT

I have a Medela electric double pump and it still takes me 30 minutes to empty my breasts. That's pumping both at the same time for 30 minutes. I wish it only took 10 but I'm not that lucky.
