Attn pumpers!

Does changing the membranes really make a huge difference? For some reason the past few days my suction hasn't been nearly as strong.. Do you think replacing the membranes would help? It's hard to imagine those little white things being so powerful..

Re: Attn pumpers!

  • Yes. If one is ripped or torn it has made a huge difference for me. I once thought my pump was broken! I replaced the membranes and instantly fixed

  • Yes, definitely.

  • I've been wondering the same thing! Thanks for posting!
  • Ok.. I have a follow up question.. If I'm pumping and nothing is coming out bc of this suction issue.. Could it effect my supply? I'm not sure if anyone can answer this, but I'm just thinking.. I won't be able to switch them out until tomorrow and I'm hoping the nipple stimulation is still good to do since I already have crappy supply issues.

I think it could. Could you try hand expression?

  • Def change out your membranes. Also, at this point, I don't think one night is going to really effect your supply so I wouldn't let it stress you out. Just switch them out when you can tmrw.

  • I am so glad you asked this cause I noticed today that my suction has slowed down too!

  • For 1 day? Probably not, but you may have to pump a little extra for a day or two to get it back up just because you already have supply issues. Maybe take PP suggestion and hand express some?

  • Thanks everyone! I'm a little embarrassed (not sure if that's the right word), but I've never been able to effectively hand express.. I did however get out my manual pump just to relieve a little engorgement until LO woke up.. Then I nursed. Thanks again! I'll be replacing the membranes tomorrow :-)

  • So glad you posted this! I think mine need to be changed. I've noticed all week that I'm getting less and the suction doesn't seem as strong as before.

Are the membranes sterile in that little plastic pack they come in? I want to change them now, but if I need to sterilize them first I'll have to do it after work.

Great question - I tried googling and checking out my pump's site, but no luck. I feel like it's probably personal preference... I'll probably just use hot water and soap when I buy them tonight.
