Compounded Prevacid

Anyone else try the compounded Prevacid? My LO has been on it almost 2 weeks now. If worked great the first few days then seemed to quit working. Seems like we are back where we started. I did some research online and a lot of people say it breaks down starting on day 1 just from everything they mix it with at the pharmacy to get it to liquid form. So by day 7 it's pretty much useless. I also read it causes stomach problems, which my LO seems to also be suffering from the last couple of days. Has anyone else tried anything other than Prevacid and Zantac? We cannot use the Prevacid solutabs because of the milk in them and the Zantac has always been useless to us. Thanks! I will be calling our GI Monday for another prescription.

Re: Compounded Prevacid

  • We use Prilosec .. Omeprezole. It's still a compounded formula, but seemed to work better for us than the Prevacid. We are also using the Zantac as a spot treatment when she has bad flare ups.
With both the Prevacid and the Prilosec, they are suspensions and will break down. If you keep it in the fridge and shake it really well it should be okay.
Another tip - I don't know how much you're giving your LO but there's a company called American compounding that you can order from and they can make the compound stronger so you can give less. And it seems (to me) to be more effective longer. Plus you can pick the flavor.

Curious if you tasted it.  Prilosec (Omeprazole) is extremely salty.  We tried compounding with flavor for awhile, but ultimately gave it up as the flavors had to be stronger (and as such offputting).
OP, Prilosec worked really well for our son for 18 months.

  • Our compounded Prevacid starts to lose effectiveness at two weeks. I refill it every 14 days for this reason. And I keep it very cold and shake well. We found a local independent pharmacy/medical supply store that seems to compound better than CVS for some reason. Our pedi actually suggested them.

  • I've tasted a few - I thought strawberry tasted good but my LO hated it. She seems to think the vanilla is okay, it kind of smells like her gas drops. Although my LO hates taking medicine period.
  • We were told it works 10-14 days. If you're on day 14-15, get a new refill.

  • Thanks everyone! I am calling our GI In the morning to see what she suggests. I loved the Prevacid for the first week then after that my son might as well have been on nothing!
  • We have been on Prilosec for 2 months. We did cherry for a while now on grape (yuck). And still has a bad aftertaste.

How do you like the Prilosec? Our GI gave my son a prescription for it today and we will start it tomorrow morning. How long did it take for you to see results?
  • It took a couple days. It is not given to help reduce the reflux but to help w the pain of reflux. I only notice it working when I miss a dose or he falls asleep for the night before his night dose. He seems more irritable then.
    Zantac did nothing.

Zantac did nothing for us either! How many times a day do you give Prilosec! Our prescription is only for once a day.

It doesn't help with the pain.  It's not a pain reliever, it's a PPI (proton pump inhibitor).  It works to reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach.
