Being in The Spotlight. A Good or Bad Thing?

I've been stationed here for about 4 years, and I've always been known to do exceptional work. I've always had zero findings in every inspection, I've gotten coined on many occassions, and this past year I've been apart of the Honor Guard, which is a huge deal in the Air Force. Along with doing great work, I'm humble. I don't expect to be recognized, but I'm constantly in the spotlight for my work. Although this is all very gratifying, I get huge opportunities thrown at me that make me un easy. I was just presented with the opportunity to be the Master of Ceremonies (narrator) at a huge gathering that will have about 400-500 Airmen, Colonels, and their family memebers present. I am an excellent public speaker, but I am so nervous. They gave me a night to think about it, and if I say no I'm uncomfortable- then that will shed a bad light on me. If I say yes, I will be too nervous over the holidays thinking about it, instead of enjoying myself. Any insight would be helpful, I'm in a bind!

  • Sometimes being pushed outside our personal comfort zone is a good thing!  You obviously do excellent work and your superiors are acknowledging this with a great opportunity.  You said yourself you are a excellent public speaker - I am sure you will be nervous - that is natural.  I say go for it!  The holidays are so busy with fun things that you will not spend all of it worrying about this

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did so. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

  • Do it. Good luck!
  • I don't have any great advice bc I know how you feel. Honestly, I would probably say yes and then be pissed at myself over the entire holiday bc of the stress.
I don't think it would reflect badly on you if pass. But would you regret not taking the opportunity?
  • Thank you ladies for all of the encouragement, I am going to go ahead and do it. My leadership obviously has a lot of confidence in me.

@shannm I think that I would regret passing up something that great that has been offered to me.

  • Good for you! To cope with the stress over the holidays, maybe prep as much as you can ahead of time and then consciously tell yourself not to worry about it during the holidays? I always tell myself that worrying never helps anyway so why do it?
