Breastfeeding/LO sleeping help!

For those of you breastfeeding and your LO is sleeping longer stretches at night... Are you setting an alarm to wake up and pump? My milk dried up when DD1 was 6 months and I didn't pump at night when she was sleeping (plus I don't think I had a good pump) but there were many things that I think caused my milk to dry up early so I'm trying to prevent it happening again so who is waking up to pump even though LO is sleeping?

Re: Breastfeeding/LO sleeping help!

  • I bring the manual pump and pump the breast he isn't eating on. He's been sleeping 6-8 he stretches so this helps release some of the pressure.

  • If I noticed a change in my supply I would wake every 3 hours to pump if LO was sleeping through feed times. At this point, though, my supply is adequate.

  • My lo is 5 weeks and still wakes up every two hours to eat, even at night
  • The longest stretch I get is 4 hours of sleep at this point and that's unusual.

I wouldn't bother pumping at night unless you are uncomfortable. Did you ask your LC?

  • I'm only pumping right now as DS is on a hypoallergenic formula but we hope to reintroduce BM. He has started sleeping 6 - 7 hour stretches and I do not pump at night. Like the PPs though, if I started to see a supply issue I would start adding a MOTN pump session.
  • Lolololol..... If only I had this problem....
  • My LO started sleeping 6-7 hour stretches. In the begining, she would usually wake up wanting to eat at 3AM.  Now, she sleeps right through it and I don't wake her.  Instead of pumping, I learned to self express.  For me it was soo much better than getting up and setting up the pump.  And, to be honest I hated hearing the sound of the pump at 3AM.  I would only express about an ounce or two, just to where I was comfortable.  Gradually my body stopped having a natural let down at 3AM.
  • My LO is sleeping between 7-8.5 hours at night and when she does wake to eat she only releases me a little where I still have to pump so I'm wondering if it would be easier to wake up after 3-4 hours from last feed pump and then when she is ready 3-4 hours after I pump she might eat more to release me then we both can go back to sleep... It only takes me 7-8 mins to pump and I'm getting 3-5oz from each breast... I just don't wanna sleep through and not pump then my milk dry up early like it did with DD1! Thank you ladies for all your input!!!!
  • your body will know what to do. Hand express just enough to make you comfortable. If you pump, your body will think it needs to keep up with the demand you are putting on it, and you might continue to struggle with engorgement. I am 7 weeks PP and my boobs are finally beginning to feel like they did before I was pregnant. It will just take time to adjust.
