Membrane sweeping... your opinions

Although I work in L&D, we don't do membrane sweeps in our practice.  However at my 39 week appointment this week I'm pretty sure that my doc will offer to do it since my cervix is favorable but I'm not sure what to say.  I will talk to them and ask what their opinion/recommendation is, but I thought I'd solicit some opinions from you ladies first.

So, what are your thoughts on this?

TIA

  • I got it done 3 times. Was favorable all 3. I ended up being induced. The outcome is different for everyone.
It will not do anything unless your body is ready.

  • I guess I'm wondering if there's any reason to decline this procedure.  Sometimes people think of things that I hadn't considered.
  • My doctor has offered this to me as well for my 39 week appointment. I have looked up a lot of what to do and so far I have found that it is a 50/50 chance of it working but I am also not sure on what to do
  • Since it's the only thing I can really DO - besides waiting - I am having one at 40+3.  We will see if it helps, but might not.

  • I've only had it done once at 39 weeks. I went into labor two days later.

  • I had one done at 38 weeks and lost my plug two days later but it didn't start labor for me either. Im 39 weeks now and I go back in on Wednesday. I may have her try it again though.
  • It doesn't hurt anything (though it may be uncomfortable) so I'm willing to try....had one last pregnancy and went into labor the next day, but I also had sex that day too, so it's hard to say if something worked or it was all coincidence.

I had it done for the first time this morning while I was in L&D being monitored. I'm 39+4. I have had bloody show, lost more mucus plug and cramping since, but contractions are still irregular. We will see what happens in the coming hours though.

  • I've had it done once. It was with my first. I was a fingertip dilated going into the appointment, and went into labor two hours later after having it done. I was scheduled to have one done at week 38 this time, but went into labor naturally before then.

You can do lots...eat a pineapple, walk walk walk, have sex, EPO...

The pineapple worked for me and it was yummy. Just have to eat the core too.
  • It worked for my sister.  With both her boys she had her membranes swept, and went into labor within 24 hours the first time, and 12 hours the second time.

One thing my OB mentioned to me is that when sweeping membranes, she thought it seemed to increase the chances of your water breaking, which might put you on the clock for induction.  Just something to consider.

  • I had it done at 39 week appt last Tuesday, I was 2cm, 60% effaced. I lost my mp Thursday evening. And now it's Sunday and no contractions or anything besides random BH I'd already been having.
  • Personally I don't think it can hurt. ( well actually it may hurt a little but not "hurt "). If you are ready to go into labor it can start it if you are ready nothing will happen.
  • last pregnancy I had one done at 39 week appointment and didn't do anything for me and had it done again at 39.6 week appointment , I was already having minimal contractions anyways and went into active labor that night and had my ds on his due date. so don't know if it worked or not , but I'm going to do it again this 39 week appointment and 40 weeks appointment.
  • I had it done at 38w2d and lost my mucus plug immediately afterwards. I was 2cm and 60% effaced. For the rest of the day I had contractions and felt like my water was going to break any second but nothing happened. I was induced at 39w4d.

  • Thanks for your stories and opinions guys.  I will probably have them do it, I've heard it will be uncomfortable but, eh... if it will help things along without much risk, why not.

  • I got mine swept at exactly 40 weeks. It put me in active labor.

I didn't think it was painful. It definitely raised my eyebrows and felt a bit uncomfortable but not painful.

  • I am going to go in today to have it done.  I am worried about the pain, but we shall see!

I have been doing these (except EPO). Also I read you have to eat like 6 pineapples in a day....... !
The membrane sweep seems like way less effort than 6 pineapples. :)

  • I'm having mine done tomorrow and just wondering how it went and if its worked for you yet??
  • I had mine done yesterday morning. Personally it was painful/uncomfortable while she was doing it and I spotted a LOT after. So far in still sitting here pregnant with nothing happening. She did however day that even if it didn't send me into active labor it would help move things along faster when I go in for my induction Friday.
  • My OB tried to sweep mine yesterday but since he had to reach around the head to get to my high cervix it was very painful and didn't work. I still wouldn't have turned it down cause I'm overdue and ready to get this kid out!
  • I had mine swept at my 39 week appointment which was at 6 pm...contractions started by 8 pm...water broke at 12:30 am. Dr said at the appointment that it's basically a 50/50 chance of something happening, but I gave it a try since I was having do much severe rib pain. Obviously you have to be close to having something start anyways since this is not going to make you go into labor by itself. Mine may have been a coincidence.
