I am such a chicken - I need to tell my boss because I am out Dec 19 until after the New Year...I wrote the memo and everything. Now I just need the courage!
I was nervous to tell mine as well, and she was very happy & supportive for me. You can do it!!

I do not have a contract - It is out of consideration due to the position I am in. I work in the Medical Device field, and on getting new products to launch, so being out for 12 weeks puts more on her plate.
Plus, I'm starting to show. I don't need rumors flying all over the place, and I would rather she knows first.
It isn't afraid of backlash either - I am a private person, and once you tell one person, everyone knows, then everyone asks a zillion questions!!
I agree that an in-person meeting to discuss it would be a good idea to start. I work in a large department so I started with human resources to start my FMLA first. After I felt confident about the pregnancy I actually sent out an email to the supervisors on my shift to alert them I may need a little extra time with things due to the pregnancy.
So far nothing horrible has happened- but they are strict with amount of time spent on breaks. I try to be mindful of this but I am hitting the constipation lately and feeling more sluggish. Not to mention already having issues with my bowels to begin with. Only problem I ran into was a supervisor who got on my case for a couple things-pregnancy issues which affected me being at my desk. I had a meltdown that day and brushed him aside because I just could not talk about things (embarrassed for crying at work).
A few days later I asked that we sit down and talk- I let him know I was not intending to break any rules and he seemed to understand that the pregnancy was more the problem. If you are concerned about losing your job you may want to go to your HR person and talk about FMLA to protect you.

I only have to give my employer enough notice to replace my position for my maternity leave.
(Just told them 2 weeks ago and I'm 27 weeks pregnant).
