Oh hey look! More on how bad antibacterial products are!

https://www.cnn.com/2013/12/16/health/fda-antibacterial/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

"Millions of Americans use antibacterial hand soap and body wash products," the agency said in a statement. "Although consumers generally view these products as effective tools to help prevent the spread of germs, there is currently no evidence that they are any more effective at preventing illness than washing with plain soap and water.

"Further, some data suggest that long-term exposure to certain active ingredients used in antibacterial products -- for example, triclosan (liquid soaps) and triclocarban (bar soaps) -- could pose health risks, such as bacterial resistance or hormonal effects."

I'll stick to Dr. Bronner's.

  • I'll never forget when my BIL told his son to go wash his hands for dinner.  "Washing hands" means rubbing them down with antibacterial foam.

I'm glad we have antibacterial products for the times when soap/water isn't available, but totally agree that in the long run they are going to cause more harm than good with frequent use.  Thanks for sharing!

ETA: I'll have to forward this to my MIL.  She buys that stuff by the gallon at Sam's Club, and I've seen her use Clorox wipes on my nephews' hands when they're dirty.  That won't fly with me!

We have Softsoap (non-antibacterial-- I think it's Aloe Vera maybe), Mrs. Meyers, Method, JASON, and a bar soap made by a local lady from goat milk.  We just rotate them (and we have 3 bathrooms and the kitchen so it seems one is always running out).  I also keep one bottle of Dial Gold around and get it out when someone is really sick or when I touch something super disgusting- like the dead animals my dog brings home- but it takes us about a whole year to use the small Dial.

Basically anything that's not antibacterial is better for everyday use.  How "natural" you want to go is up to you and your budget.

ETA: Posted before I was done.
