Which breast pump?

Which breast pump do you recommend and why? I'm looking between the Ameda Purely Yours and the Medela Advanced Style, these 2 are covered by my insurance with the exception of a small upgrade fee. I'm going back to work and will be pumping at work which will play a factor in my decision. Thank you!!!!

Re: Which breast pump?

  • My insurance plan covered both of those as well. I went with the Medela Advanced simply because I have heard a lot more about the Medela brand being wonderful and because I know for certain that I can get all the replacement parts and accessories I need at BRU or Target. I also know several moms who used the Medela pumps and liked them; I've never known anyone who used the Ameda. I'm sure either one is great, though...I've heard that as long as you have a double electric pump as a working mom, you'll be fine!

  • I went with the Medela. I'm a simple girl and have a few friends that have used and liked the Medela, so I just went for it to minimize decisions, ha, just being honest.
  • Insurance will cover breast pump expenses???!!! How do I get this? Does my OB have to write me script or something? Tell me everything, I am beyond intrigued by this new information.
  • @laurenseiter Depending on your insurance, all your OB has to do is write a prescription that says breast pump.

I didn't even need a script from my OB. I just called the phone number on the back of my insurance card, and they gave me a phone number of a supplier to call. I called the supplier, gave my insurance information, and in two weeks, a brand new Medela Advanced pump was on my doorstep! Easy breezy. I do know several friends have said their insurance only covered PART of their pump cost, but something is better than nothing! Hope this helps!

Edgepark.com will have all the info. Went through them today and it was painless.

Talk to your insurance to find out what they need.  Mine DID need a prescription.  Last time, I had to wait until after LO showed up, but this time, I could get it whenever.  I also had to purchase it from a medical supply store.  Last time, I got the Ameda, this time, I'm trying the Medela.

I'm only trying the Medela for variety and because I've heard wonderful things about it.  The Ameda was fantastic, I EPed with it for a year, and I still have it. You pretty much can't go wrong with whatever one you get.

  • insurance now has to cover both breastpumps and lactation consultants :-) some require a prescription and most will require you to go through a medical supply company rather than a retail store. every insurance has a slightly different process but they all have to cover (the one exception I heard of is medicare).

  • Ameda is a CLOSED system, the Medela is an OPEN system - for that reason i'm going with Ameda.

But in all honesty, I don't think you'll be disappointed with either from everythign I've read, so I wouldn't fret on it too much.  Maybe look and see what replacement parts are easier to get near you?

  • @wedbliss5 do you know what the pros/cons are of a 'Closed' vs. 'Open' system?
  • @jenten810:

Basically, an open system has the potential to get contaminated which is a big issue if you are ever buying/borrowing a used pump or selling yours, but I also have concerns about cleaning and bacteria and such within the open system.  I doubt the latter is much of an issue considering how popular the Medela are, but its one less thing I have to worry about.

  • @wedbliss5 thanks for the information. After reading that link the closed system sounds better, especially from a cleaning standpoint.
  • Hi ladies!
I called my insurance company today and I'll be receiving my breast pump in the mail in about 10 days!! But of course I forgot to ask the brand I'm getting because I was just so excited by the ease of it all and that I was getting one in the first place. I just wanted to thank all of you again for the info!! I am so so excited!!!!!!!
  • When I submitted the script to the pharmacy I didn't get to choose a brand, but I received the Medela Advanced today: https://www.toysrus.com/buy/electric-breast-pumps/medela-pump-in-style-advanced-breast-pump-on-the-go-tote-57063t-10812796

I'm not looking forward to pumping, but I've heard a ton of good things about this model :)

No, they don't. There are several ways around this new regulation and many do not cover either a pump or lactation services at all.
  • I feel as though I see a breast pump post every other day.
