Introducing Peanut Butter

DS is 13 months old and I am looking for ideas on how to introduce peanut butter to him. We have some history of allergies in the family so I am a little wary of giving it to him in case he has an allergic reaction. My nieces (related through DH's side) have nut allergies but DH and I think it could stem from their mom (since she has allergies) who is not related by blood to DS. My side has allergies but not to nuts and those allergies developed later in life.

For those who have gone through this, did you introduce it during hours when the pediatrician was open? I have heard stories of people parking outside the ER before giving peanut butter for the first time which sounds extreme to me :)

Thanks!

Edited: DH would like to wait until he is older to give him peanut butter so that he can tell us if something is wrong but I would like to give it to him sooner because I have read that it is less likely to result in an allergic reaction.

Re: Introducing Peanut Butter

  • Based on my pedi's suggestion we introduced a thin layer on bread (i.e. a PB sandwich) around 12 months. I chose to introduce it at lunch and on the weekend. The first time they eat it usually does not cause an issue. It is the second or third time when you would see an allergic reaction.

  • We introduced it right before 1 year and actually just put a little on her lip or our finger I dont remember which and let her lick it. Did this for 3 days in a row and then gave her a piece of toast with some on it. We have no history of allergy in our family, but we wanted to give her the smallest amount possible the first time.
  • Do it during the week if possible in case you need to bring him in to the pedi's office. Also, don't do it before a nap or bedtime in case there is a reaction. They can have a reaction the first time so do a small amount. My son has a peanut allergy and had a reaction the very first time. Good luck!

  • Isn't it crazy that this something our parents never had to worry about? I gave DD peanut butter cereal the first time, so that the amount would be small. That was fine, so then I did a little bit on bread. She's had no issues, thank goodness.

The doctor's office parking lot does seem crazy, yet I would consider it with a family history of allergies if you are close by and it's no big deal to go there. I'm torn on whether it's crazy, or practical. Good luck!

  • My husband accidentally gave our son peanut butter cereal and that is when he had his first reaction. It was moderate. Then, a different time my mom gave my son peanut butter on toast and he had a very severe reaction.

  • Thanks everyone! I work but luckily our pedi is open on Saturdays so I might introduce it for the first time this Saturday. And luckily my SIL is a pedi so the second time might be on Christmas Day when she is around and the other in-laws (who have the kids with nut allergies) are also around with the epi pen!

  • My sister is highly allergic to peanuts (still haven't given any to my 19 mo son because of that).  She never had MAJOR reactions until she was older, but they got worse each time (they had to stop and restart her heart with the last reaction).  She was exposed from a young age (bc people didnt worry about this stuff back then) but would complain to my mom that she felt sick whenever she had peanuts.  They didn't find out she was allergic until she was 3.  So, it might be a mild reaction from the start - maybe even just an upset stomach.
  • we introduced around 8 months-- I did almond butter first-- just a smidge on a cheerio, after a few times of trying almond butter without problems, we did peanut butter.   Again, just a smidge on a cheerio, and then after a few days I gave her more substantial servings.

I introduced it on a Saturday afternoon.  I have children's benadryl in my medicine cabinet, but was not tracking if the pedi's office was open then or anything.

  • We introduced around 8 or 9 months I think... On a whole wheat ritz cracker.
  • Just remember that allergies sometimes need an initial exposure or two to manifest. So just be aware that even though the first time yields nothing negative, the second may. My son reacted on his second exposure with hives. We have been operating under the assumption that he has an allergy since. He was about 14 months then.
  • We introduced fairly early, and I was nervous about it because my stepson has peanut and tree nut allergies. SS had a reaction the very first time he ate a food with peanuts. DS has had absolutely no issues.
  • my in-laws gave DD a nutter butter cookie when she was about 7 months- they didn't think anything about it until after the fact when I remarked that I guessed she wasn't allergic to pb since she'd eaten a whole cookie with no reaction :-w...our pediatrician said we didn't have to wait to introduce her to allergy-prone foods because new research has show delayed introduction doesn't help prevent reactions...we weren't too worried about it since there's no food allergy history on either side of the family, but if there had been, I would have preferred to do it on a day the pediatrician's office was open, just in case

  • Thanks everyone! I decided that  I will start with putting a little on his skin first and then letting him ingest some. Hearing all your experiences has made me a lot more confident about taking the plunge! :)

  • Our pediatrician told us to test it out on the back of DD's hand. That way if there was a sign of skin irritation thta was a way to identify a possibly severe allergy prior to having DD swallow it and get in her system. We tried this a few times with no reaction and went ahead and gave her a little taste and monitored her closely for about an hour. We slowly just intoduced it a little at a time and she was fine and totally loves it.

  • My grandmother gave my 1 year old a dab of pb while my sister was watching her. She immediately broke out in hives which prompted my sister to take her to the ER. She was given Benadryl and 2 other meds and was back to normal. They told us to avoid all nuts for now and now I carry an Epi-pen for her. We have an appointment with an allergist in January. Luckily her reaction wasn't as severe as it could've been. Good luck!
