Have you enrolled your LO in any activities yet?

Kate and I are both going stir crazy already this winter. There is a shit ton of snow outside and I'm not a winter person. Pre kids I would just stay holed up all winter with several books and DVDs-neither my husband or I are very social. But being holed up with an active toddler is not proving a fun time, for Kate or me. I just enrolled her in a Jitterbug dance class through the Y and I'm thinking about a kid's gym class that my coworker attends with her son. I work very part time from home, so we are basically home 24/7. Please share what activities you and/or your kiddo are doing.

Re: Have you enrolled your LO in any activities yet?

  • We go to library story time, and we have memberships to the children's museum and zoo. Personally, I don't really like too many structured or scheduled activities. I prefer to have flexibility in my day.

I'm like you though, I cannot stand being at home all day. We go out every day, to either the above activities or shopping, visiting friends, etc.

  • Oh, and I think a dance class does sound really fun!
  • DD and I do Kindermusik in the fall and spring but take summers off. It is 1 time a week for 45mins. Figure it is at least something to get us out and for her to play with other kids around her age.

  • No activities for us.  Daycare is expensive enough :(

Wish I could be a fly on the wall at a toddler dance class...I bet it is priceless.

  • We did swimming classes at the Y a while ago. My son loved them but it was super chaotic to fit in his schedule. I plan on enrolling him in a gymnastics class when he drops his morning nap (the class goes on during his current morning nap).

I agree with megispreg that we try not to do too many scheduled activities. We only have weekends since DD is in daycare during the week. Just this month, though, we started swim lessons at the Y. A friend and I signed up our husbands and babies and we exercise during the class. They really like it so far. We have a pool in our backyard, so DD learning to swim is a priority.

  • I would like to enroll DS in swimming classes but can't find any on the weekends. They are always during the week and I work FT. Maybe this summer.

  • We are going to sign up for gymboree after Christmas. DD1 did this for 3 years and loved it. I need to add some more fun activities in our day. Between school drop off and pick up and nap, our days seem to fly by. With DD1 I did Gymboree and a moms group, I feel guilty not having DD2 do anything.

  • Paid activities are the last thing on my mind right now. It's hard enough getting quality time with her as it is. But when she's older and more likely to participate I'd consider dance, swim and music classes.

  • We have done swimming classes but we moved a few months ago and have a pool at our house now so we haven't been back there. There is a music class that I have been wanting to enroll Jeffrey in but the class time each session has always conflicted with his nap time. We are going to the children's museum on Thursday since I have the day off from work. I took him to an indoor playground last Sunday but there were too many older kids there (even in the toddler area which annoyed me!) The dance class sounds fun!

We are going to be visiting New Orleans in May (tagging along with my mom on her conference.) The children's museum is on my list, along with the zoo, aquarium and insectarium. Also Storyland in City Park. I may ask for your opinions on more ideas for Kate the closer it gets.

How fun! That is a great time to visit! The places that you mentioned would be at the top of my list. Definitely city park - they have a nice train ride around the park and a carousel, plus they recently opened a Morning Call there so you can get beignets. We took Jeffrey for a streetcar ride down st charles ave last month and he enjoyed it! This is probably too far for you, but if you ever come down and can take an hour drive, you have to check out global wildlife in folsum - it is awesome! You can take a safari tour and feed the animals. A fun restaurant downtown is Mulates - the food is just ok but they play Cajun music and kids always enjoy the dancing. The monkey room is also downtown - this is the indoor play area that I mentioned - if you go during the day during the week I bet it wouldn't be crowded - it's an easy visit. I will let you know if I think of other ideas!
    Thank you for the ideas!
  • One more thing, check with me before your trip - the company that I work for sponsors the zoo/aquarium and it is pretty easy to get free passes - I could get a couple for you!

I will do that! Thank you so much!

Haha!  Is your LO training to be the next "American Ninja Warrior"?  My husband is obsessed with that show?  I think he just likes to watch people fall!

At 20-week anatomy scan found IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Restriction), and very low Amniotic Fluid.  Now, I'm High Risk and have weekly ultrasounds to monitor fluid and growth.  If baby runs out of room or is too growth restricted, they will deliver ASAP.  My current goal is to make it to 28 weeks!

@asales727 - I hear you about daycare being expensive as it is.  Then when I check out differant activiteis, like Gymboree, MyGym, etc,  I'm surprised at how expensive they are!

@nenecakies - I work FT and agree that it is hard enough to get quality time with DD on the weekends.  Espcahlly when we've got all our chores pilled up from the week!

Last winter and spring I did do swim classes at the Y on Saturday mornings.  Its was tricky since it was scheduled right before her morning nap.  It was a struggle to keep her awaje until we got home!  I didn't want her to fall asleep in the car because then I couldn't get her to fall back asleep when we got home!  I enjoyed it, and like PPs mentioned, water safetly is really important to me.  We don't have a pool, but I want her to feel comfortable in water and learn how to be safe around a pool, etc.  We went to an outdoor pool a few times over the summer, but I'm hoping when she's older it can be a more regular thing.  I think another session starts in mid January, so I think I want to sign me and her up for that!

I also signed her up for a (free) story time at the library this past fall ... that didn't go so well since it was scheduled AT her naptime.  It was during the week, so her sitter took her a few times, but then decided its wasn't worth it.  And I was ok with that.  It starts back up in January, so we might give it another try.

I'm debating on the KinderMusic.  A session starts later in January.  It ends right around when she'd be going down for her morning nap.  So I think it is something the sitter could take her to.  But then I get jealious about spending THAT much money on a class that I don't get to go to with her!  b-(

  • We do music class on Sunday mornings. It's a 45min class of singing and banging on musical instruments. Mostly the parents sing and the kids bang things together. She loves it and I love getting to do an activity with her!

  • I'm taking DS to a toddler gym class on Thursday. If all goes well, we will probably enroll him.
We are the same, we are home a lot & it's not working out that well for any of us! lol
We hit different parks around town. We TRY to meet up with other mom friends but schedules always seem to conflict. I can't really do my long walks around the neighborhood anymore because DS wants to get out of the stroller and run wild. I'd like to start going to some fun music classes for toddlers, but they always hold the classes during nap time! :-( boo...

  • We did swimming lessons this summer and she starts gymnastics (mommy + me class) when she hits 18 months.
  • Mine go to school/daycare and they come home beat and go to bed at 6:30 pm (it's awesome) and they love it so we are keeping weekends to family time. I've looked into class descriptions at my gym but they can do all listed for their age group. I'd love to do music together but it's during their nap.
  • we do music and me, have play dates, go to the park (usually later in the afternoon when it's warmer), library, aquarium, and long walks and picnics.
