Severe diaper rash 9 month old

My 9 month old son just recently developed very severe diaper rash it's so bad it's bleeding.. He has had some diarrhea lately and is cutting his top teeth.. Can you recommend what diaper cream you have used and please give me pointers on how to make this less painful for him. It's so heartbreaking seeing him in so much pain when I have to wipe his little butt

  • We use butt paste if he gets a rash but every night we put in Anti Itch Monkey Butt ( same makers as butt paste) in his diaper as a preventative since he is in the same diaper for 12+ hours.
  • Gosh we're going through something similar.  DD has a stomach bug and her little behind got so red and irritated within hours from loose stool.  As a PP said, DO NOT use regular wipes as most have alcohol in them.  You can buy alcohol free wipes but I'm using clean warm wash clothes for now.  That seems to have helped a lot with the diaper change meltdown.  I also have her in the next size up diaper.  She seems a bit more comfy.  Also, I let her air out whenever possible.

There are several things out there I've read about.  My day care swears by a paste of Maalox and corn starch.  Haven't tried this yet but might today.  I've also used medicated A&D with corn starch over it.  I put bag balm on her last night and this morning.  She seemed a little less red this morning. And my aunt swears by Vagisil.  Haven't tried that yet either but I might.  Of course, if she isn't any better today I plan to take her to the doctor.

Are you giving your LO electrolytes?  Also,  her doc suggested we stop everything except formula and electrolytes (rotated), crackers, cheerios, and yogurt 1-2 times a day to replenish the good bacteria she's losing.

Good luck.  I hope your LO gets better soon.
  • We found Desitin extra strength (make sure its the 40% zinc) works best for us.

the key with all creams is to use a tissue to completely dry the bum first, otherwise the cream traps the moisture on the rash making it worse.

If it's irritation from the constant contact with poop then you need a barrier cream (like desitin) if its yeast then canestan or monistat will help. If its fungal get a prescription from the doc.

If the open wounds are bad I will put a bit of polysporin on first then the barrier cream on top of that.

  • Whatever diaper cream you try, buy a SMALL container first. We heard that Triple Paste was the BEST so we got a HUGE container of it, and it sucked for us. It was so thin and just soaked right into his skin and did not protect him at all.

I will echo PP's... do NOT use wipes on your baby! Use a damp washcloth or cotton balls wet with some water. Be sure to let baby's bum thoroughly air dry, and spend as much time diaperless as you can. I know it's harder now that they roll everywhere, but seriously it helps to let the bum air out as much as possible.

I think when it comes to diaper creams, every baby is different, but we tried a lot of them, and hand's down the Burt's Bees worked best for our guy's severe diaper rash. We would clean him with water, pat him dry, let him air out as long as possible, then put a thick layer of Burt's Bees cream on. It is really thick and stays in place forever. It really does a good job at providing a barrier. We also don't wipe his bum unless he has pooped; otherwise, we just let it dry and apply more cream. And of course, change diapers very frequently. You may even consider MOTN diaper changes until the rash gets better, just so baby isn't lying in a wet diaper all night.

  • DD developed a severe case of diaper rash after being on antibiotics which caused terrible diarrhea.  Her pedi recommended using hydro-cortisone cream first and giving her lots of air time and then using diaper cream.  She said to apply the hydro-cortisone cream about 3x per day. We found Burt's Bees to be the best for diaper rash cream.
  • Lots of naked time. Vasoline & cornstarch worked great for my kiddos. Also baking soda in bath water. That helps sooo much.

My pediatrician recommended using neosporin or something similar once they already have a rash. She said it helps it heal more quickly, and I think it helps with the pain too. Dr said that the pastes and powders are really a preventative measure, once the rash is there they don't do a whole lot to help heal it quicker or anything.

DD2 has gotten a couple of rashes and I my method is to clean her up (if you can, using a sprayer in the tub, rather than wipes, seems to be much less abrasive) and make sure she's really good and dry, then I apply the neosporin and put the paste over it (I like Burt's Bee's diaper cream). I've only had to do this a few times but it always works within about a day to clear things up.

This!!!!!!!! Our LO normally doesn't get rashes, but when he had diarrhea a couple months ago, he got a horrible one. We kept slathering Desitin on, and it wasn't helping any. We switched to Triple Paste, and it was gone in a day or two.

  • Our little one has it... It's just about clear then flares up again. The doc recommended an anti fungal cream which I apply beginning middle and end of day. Other nappys changes I use a cream called bepanthen here in australia ... Also try giving him some nudie bum time to let the air about his bum and loosen the nappy a little around his bum. And also changing nappys as soon as you know it's been wet or dirtied just until it at least starts to improve. It's horrible for them I know, I think it can flare up with teething too?

  • Ask the pharmacist for an anti fungal cream. The kind they prescribe for yeast diaper rashes. You can buy it over the counter. It worked my LO when she had a rash from diarrhea. You use it twice a day and regular diaper rash cream the rest of the time.

Also we did lots of naked time with puppy pads underneath her.
  • DD's pedi gave us some samples of Calmoseptine.  This stuff is awesome.  I noticed a difference overnight.  After 2 days her poor little bum is almost completely healed.  :D

    This! It's called Clotrimazole!
  • Pinxav, it's behind the pharmacist's counter (I got it at Target). My 4 month old had blisters on her booty and this stuff cleared it right up!
  • When that happens to my son I shower him then put some butt paste on. Personally its better than other creams we have used.

It's so heartbreaking to see our sweeties suffering! I tried so many different butt creams and alternative OTC remedies. What worked for my son was using wipes that I soaked In a baking soda and highly diluted vinegar solution, sitting him in a tub with aveeno oatmeal excema soak and baking soda, and using bag balm (the ointment designed for use on cow udders, sold in drug stores as a lotion for cracked skin) for his butt. Worked wonders! Good luck!
  • Seventh Generation has some diaper cream we tried last night and it seemed to work well too.

  • If he has open sores that won't heal, talk with your doctor about a skin protectant like Ilex. This is not a diaper cream but it is a skin protectant used when attaching something to your body, for example a ostomy bag.

This stuff will not easily come off the skin (soaking is necessary) so you need to be sure you have tried everything else. You can see the skin healing underneath this protectant and you will need to use vaseline over the Ilex and only wipe that off and leave the Ilex intact and then replace with Vaseline.

Again, don't use on your own but call your doctor and see if they think it is bad enough that you need something like this.

  • put A&D so that's not painful even before you start to wipe a dirty diaper. Then put it on again and Desitin on top. I would also check with pedi that it's not a fungal/yeast infection if it is that bad and bleeding.
  • When my DD was about a year she had a terrible case with bleeding. I'm going to echo a lot of what PP's said. Pedi recommended a combination of anti fungal cream (what you use for atheletes food), neosporin and something else (desitin maybe). I would squirt a little of each onto my finger and mix together before I applied it to her bottom.  Use warm wash clothes instead of wipes, make sure baby's bottom is completely dry before you put anything on it and give baby as much time as possible without the diaper to give it some air. Good luck!

  • It Might Be Yeast. try lotrimin twice a day and desitin max or aquaphor over it for a couple days, you sheould see an improvement after the third application or so, if not, it's not yeast. i use bag balm for acid poop rash too. also takes a few days, but works well.

  • My Dr recommended using a blow dryer on warm setting help dry off baby's bum. Also, I use trader joe's coconut oil (which I believe is naturally antifungal) and cloth diapers. DD has yet to have a real diaper rash from cloth diapers. She had terrible ones from disposable, so if it is a recurring problem, it might help to try cloth.
