Lets talk about Benadryl

So I'm having an allergic reaction to something (pretty sure I got some strawberry Saturday night at a Christmas party) and my neck and chest are covered with itchy.  I took a claritin yesterday, which usually works, but woke up itchy again today.  I should have called my OB earlier today, but finally took a benadryl and PTFO.  Well, I woke up 2 hours later and it's back and oh so itchy.  I know a lot of ladies here take Benadryl fairly regularly to sleep, so is it generally regarded as safe to take 2 (50mg total)?  I just want to make it to the morning....

  • I take 2 every night and have for the majority of my pregnancy.
  • Thanks ladies, that's exactly what I was hoping to hear!  Warned my husband not to try and wake me unless the house is on fire tonight.  I've only ever had to take 2 benadryl once before and lets just say I was a force to be reckoned with when he tried to wake me before my body was ready, lol.

  • Just to give you one more vote of confidence that it's fine My OB said 50mg a day is fine ... It is my new BFF with helping me sleep!!!!
  • Yeah I take 2 at night as well...did with my last pregnancy too. You should be fine!

  • Yep you're good to go!

  • Even in first trimester? I'm 4.5 weeks and have a Terrid cold and just need to sleep it off!
  • @ashleywalley I took 2 every night even in my first trimester. Obviously ask your doctor, but my doc approved it.
  • I got a terrible case of poison ivy in high school and kept itching in my sleep. My Dr okay'd 4 at a time to stop me from scratching and spreading it in my sleep. I wouldn't do that pregnant, obviously but I think you were fine with the 2 for sure.

Hope you're feeling better today! :(

@Ashleywalley Benedryl is a pregnancy category B. Those are generally regarded as okay no matter the trimester. If you're really worried you should call your OB.

  • I am a Benadryl whore! I can't sleep without it! I-)
  • Thanks again ladies.  I've been using the spray Benadryl during the day and pills at night, but my neck and chest are itchy as soon as it starts to wear off!  My husband keeps telling me to go to the doctor, but I really, really don't want to get steroids and I know that's the next step....  ugh.
