UPDATE - Maybe Mo/di?

I just got back from my first appointment at my new practice.  I went from a low-risk, all midwife practice to a midwife/ob practice that deals with twin pregnancies more proactively (more appointments, scheduling with the MFM quicker, etc).  My first u/s (7 weeks) where we discovered the twins was with my old practice, and the twins were said to be di/di.  I had another u/s at 10 weeks with the old practice and never heard anything from that one.  Today, I had an u/s at the new practice, and the OB I saw said that from looking at my latest u/s and the 10 week one, my twins appear to have a fused placenta.  They are trying to get me in with an MFM next week to figure out for sure what they are.  Is it possible that they were di/di to start and the placenta fused after 7 weeks?  Or could the placentas be so close together that they look like one, but are actually two?  I won't know officially until I have a higher level u/s, but I am just trying not to be too concerned.  Did anyone else have anything similar happen?

Re: UPDATE - Maybe Mo/di?

  • At my 7w appointment all my OB would tell me is that I had a healthy looking membrane between the two sacs, which was a great sign.  She asked me to wait until my NT Scan to ask if they were mo/di or di/di, and as soon as the technician put the wand to my belly he said they were di/di.  He just had better equipment to tell me.

Other than that, I can't help you, sorry!  Tons of ladies on here have healthy mo/di pregnancies and babies, so you don't have to worry too much about it :)

  • Yes, two placentas can look like one. I have di/di twins. There were clearly two sacs at the early u/s at my RE's ultrasound. However, at my NT scan, the tech said there was one placenta. The placentas were just so close you couldn't distinguish one from the other. It doesn't change the fact that they are di/di twins.

  • Mine are di/di with a fused placenta. MFM said almost all di/dis have this bc there's only so much room. Same thing happened w me- u/s @ 7wks & 9wks di/di. Then dr. Scanned at 12 and said either mo/di or fused. Definitely fused. MFM said it poses no risks bc not sharing blood supply/veins etc.
  • I found out at 16 weeks I was pregnant with twins and ever since then I've had what looks to be 1 placenta (but could be fused) and also a very thin membrane separating the girls which is why my MFM thinks mo/di. We won't find out 100% certain until they are born :/

  • At my 12 week u/s the tech asked me what they were and I told her when I asked the OB at 7 weeks he said she would tell me. She laughed and said she hated that because its easier to tell early on and gets tougher as they get bigger and the placentas move etc. So it sounds like they could definitely be di/di it's just at the point now where the placentas are close/ fused.

  • My 10 week u/s of my mo/di twins looked like two babies in one big black sac. The membrane between them was so faint it looked like a dotted line. I'd they said di/di at the first one, that's likely what it is. It's possible for placentas to fuse but they are still di/di and still are in different chorionic sacs so they should be able to still tell at this gestation. I hope the MFM can confirm for you
  • My 3 were tri tri but all 3 placentas fussed C's all the way with A's and C's part way with B's.

From my mosts recent u/s, I only have photos of the individual babies and I don't have them on my phone right now, but I can upload tomorrow if that helps.

Definitely di/di. There's really no mistaking that in my opinion. These are my mo/di at 10 weeks. Can barely seem a dividing membrane.

  • I agree with @Mrs. Alice. My mo/di's looked like the picture she posted. Their membrane has always been very thin.

  • Yep same here....there was no visible membrane at all on my first u/s (lucky me for not knowing enough to worry). I would say yours are clearly di/di.

  • Looks like mine. Definitely didi!!
  • Thanks, ladies!  I wonder why the OB is questioning it…it looks pretty obvious to me too.  Oh, well.  I am sure the MFM will confirm.

  • My OB when she did the u/a also questioned it. That being said, she hadn't seen the RE's u/s so thy was the first she had seen. I had the same question on are a couple months ago. No worries! Mine look exactly like yours and I'm having b/g twins. :)
  • Well, you all were right!  I definitely have two healthy di/di babies.  It was so neat seeing each of them today!  Thank you for commenting on my question!

  • Are u going to stay team green or find out? Excited for you!
  • @Momof8inSC - definitely planning on finding out, but not sure when. My anatomy scan was scheduled at almost 21 weeks (I have both my previous ones at 18 and 19 weeks), and I have two ultrasounds before that, but they made it sound like they are really strict about when they do certain scans.  So I do not know if that means that I will just not be able to have my anatomy scan until 21 and they will tell me the sexes if they take a peek earlier, or if they are going to stay tight-lipped until the big a/s.  I REALLY hope I get a nice tech who tells me sooner!!  I would hate for them to be too cramped in there to find out!  And thank you!

  • Haha I understand. I found out at 16w and it was confirmed at 18 & 20w. They won't be too cramped. Though it WILL feel like it haha!!
