Not pumping enough

DH has been giving DD a 4oz bottle of BM at night for the last couple weeks. I pump when he does that. Some nights I get 4oz or more, other nights I barely get 2. I'm going back to work in a couple of weeks and now I'm concerned that I won't be able to pump enough when I'm working. Anyone have advice on this? Would I need to add extra pumping sessions to make up for it, instead of just pumping when she would be taking a bottle?

Re: Not pumping enough

  • Many people add a pumping session after LO nurses first thing in the morning. Milk production is the highest in the early morning.

  • There's lots of factors. Your dd doesn't eat the exact same amount all the time. So your production could be just fine. And it's normal for production to have some variance. Even the amount a time between nursing and pumping can make a difference.

Make sure your eating enough and drinking tons of water. And try not to stress!

  • right now, I would just nurse and not do the pumping/bottle feeding.

before I went back to work after DS was asleep for the night, I would pump and freeze he milk. I usually got between 1 and 2 ounces a night. I had over 100 ounces by the time I went back to work, which has allowed me time to get my pumping schedule/supply up enough to replace what DS is eating at daycare.
