Maxillary Frenulum

So I was looking inside DD's mouth yesterday to see if her top two teeth had finally made an appearance (which by the way they have not!) and noticed that her maxillary frenulum is attached to her gum.  So basically the little flap of skin that usually attaches the lip to  the mouth wraps under her gum instead.  Does anyone have any experience with this, I work in a pediatric hospital so I am reaching out to a few people but was interested to know if anyone had some mom experience with this.  Thanks!  And I can't believe it took me 10 months to finally notice this!

Re: Maxillary Frenulum

  • My ds is that way too. It grows between his front teeth. I had this as a child too and had to have mine clipped. I plan on bringing this up with his dr at our apt in Feb to see when it would be appropriate to cut it back.

  • I should add, it gapped my teeth badly but if I wasn't vain and petty about it, I wouldn't have needed to do anything about it. I think. :) good luck and let me know what you find out!

  • Yes, that is exactly where hers will be (when her top front teeth come in!)  I will keep you posted, it sounds like the plastic surgeon will want to clip it in the OR because of her age, but I haven't had an appointment yet, just spoke with a nurse practitioner and that is what she said they typically do.  I am inclined to do it at a young age to prevent the tooth gap thing and this way she won't remember, I will be the only one traumatized!

I agree. I had mine clipped by the dentist at 11 years old. It was OK but kind of freaky to a kid.

Unfortunately I never noticed it in E until his teeth came in so he's got the gap. I'm hoping if I get it taken care of his adult teeth will come in straight (mine didn't).

  • Random piece of information: I had that little flap of skin pierced when I was a teenager. LOL.  It didn't hurt all that bad either so maybe clipping it wouldn't be too awful.

  • My DD had a upper lip tie, and we had it clipped at 1 1/2 because it was causing a large gap between her teeth.  We were told that it could cause speech and teeth problems, and since hers was so far down, we went ahead and got it clipped.  The problem with doing it that young is they have to be put to sleep, but the problem with waiting is it can cause problems- you just won't know until later how bad they are.  She was asleep for about 15 minutes total, only a drop of blood after, and she ate immediately after.  She had some Tylenol, but she acted completely normal.

  • Remembering my personal experience, I would definitely do E as a baby so he wouldn't remember it.  Thinking about it as an adult, I'm sure it wasn't as bad as I remember, but at the same time ,I remember it being awful.  So yeah.  Doing it as a little.

  • Thanks ladies! Glad to see there are others who agree, I'm not nervous about the sedation, I am with kids who get sedated on a regular basis and really trust our team. Now to find someone who will agree to do it! The hospital does have some lasers I wonder if they would do it that way ! Thanks again!
  • @uncaripswife What type of doctor should we have look at this, a pediatric dentist or the regular pedi?
