Feeding Question

I am a FTM and I had my twin girls last Tuesday. They were 36w and 5d when they were delivered. I tried to BF but I haven't produced much milk and made the decision to switch to formula. While I was BF I supplemented with formula. They were taking the Similac formula I was supplementing with with no problems and now that they are getting only that kind of formula at feedings they don't eat as much. They would eat between 1 and 1/2 to 2 ounces of formula after trying to BF and now they only about an ounce at each feeding. Is this normal? Will the amount they eat increase as they adjust to the formula? I just worry they aren't getting enough to eat. I appreciate any advice the experienced twin moms can give me.

Re: Feeding Question

  • Congrats mommy! Yes, it's normal. They are not even a week old. My twins also drank around 1-1 and a half ounce of milk in the initial days. My twins are 4 months old. Their appetite will increase as they'll grow. Good to know - formula is very filling when compared to breast milk. As long as they're being fed every 2-3 hours it's fine. Just keep a watch on their diapers. God luck!

  • COngratulations!
totally normal. Our ped said to take their weight and multiply by 2.5 and that's how many ounces they should eat in 24 hours. Or, add 1 to their age and that's how many ounces per feeding (so if they are 0 months old, you add 1 to that and get 1 oz per feeding) or so.
    Good luck!!
  • Thanks ladies!! This makes me feel better.

  • I just wanted to say that I think it's normal to not produce much milk in the first week. I think it took me at least 5 days for my milk to even to come in and then when pumping I wasn't even getting an ounce. It takes a while for your supply to pick up. No judgment on switching to formula (I had tons if problems with BF), I just wanted you to know in case you wanted to keep trying. My supply slowly built until I was pumping about 32oz a day. And as long as babies are having wet diapers and gaining weight, you should be fine. They don't eat a ton at first. Formula is def more filling. We had to supplement and would give formula at night so she would sleep longer. :) good luck with everything!
  • Taking a full ounce of formula is pretty good for that age! It is much more filling than breastmilk. As long as they aren't still acting hungry, are gaining weight, and producing enough wet and dirty diapers, you are fine.:)
