Sippy cup issues

Anyone else have a baby who totally doesn't "get it" with the sippy cup yet? C is 7.5 months and she doesn't understand how to suck on anything but boob. Not her thumb, bottle, hand, toys, nothing. I've tried the straw cup and she has accidentally gotten a mouthful maybe a couple of times since we introduced it just before 6 months. We are also trying a regular sippy (not the vented kind that make it harder to suck, just basically a spout with a hole) and she can get a bit out of that but only because she just chews on the silicone spout. Is there any way to "teach" them how to use one or is it just a "it will come with time" thing? She won't take a bottle so I was hoping she would take a sippy with bm so I could go out for more than a couple of hours at a time and know she will be fed.

We have a doidy cup and she loves it...not particularly good at drinking from it (about half of every sip ends up running down her chin because she excitedly grabs at it and shoves it into her mouth out of our hands). Should we just stick with the doidy cup and not worry about the sippy cups (or at least not until she is a bit older?) or keep offering the sippy cup or straw cup?

Thanks for the input!

Yup, not even close here. However, I don't offer it that often. My pedi preferred us to not offer water or juice yet but said if I really wanted to put formula in it. Ehhh I am not interested in him drinking cold formula and neither is he.

  • We've offered it a few times, but he has no idea what to do, really. I tried tipping it up to his mouth to show him (and also tried taking out the vent) but it didn't make much of a difference.  He is bottle fed, and doesn't hold the bottle himself either  - he does put his hands on it to "help" sometimes, but doesn't completely do it himself.

I'm not stressing about it. It'll come in time. Or it won't, and he'll move straight to regular cups. I figure it isn't worth worrying about it, or else there'd be a whole lot of 10 year olds walking around with baby bottles, y'know? :)

  • Not that good at drinking from a sippy, he gets some, but not really on purpose. He is the best at drinking from a rim. We don't have a doidy, but just use a regular cup. He does dribble a lot, but he's getting better at it. I would keep using the doidy and offer an easy sippy here and there.

Same here except we didn't try a sippy.

I'd stick with the doidy, too!
  • C doesn't get it either. He just plays with it.

  • Thanks ladies. It's good to know C isn't the only one! It just seems like I keep hearing "well my baby started using the sippy cup at 6 months" or "she still isn't taking one?" so I'm glad to know she is normal :) we will keep practicing and using the doidy cup

  • Lexie uses her sippy cup as a teether. She occasionally gets a bit of water out and immediately loses interest.

  • Mine uses hers to smash it off things or chew on it. She has not the slightest interest in drinking from it. She would rather drink from my water glass.

  • ^^same. E dribbles it all over as well. She gets frustrated that too much comes out.

  • Same as everyone else - he uses it to chew on or slam against things. I've tried to show him but he wasn't very interested.
  • We just tried the sippy cup for the first time last night.  She mostly just slammed it against the table.  The doidy cup was a big old mess when we tried it, but she was interested.

@lizzyg11you said she doesn't suck on toys, fingers, etc.  She does put stuff in her mouth though to explore?

I'd put a Movember mustache fail, but then
you'd all have to look at it until February.
  • sounds like we're in the minority, but we haven't even introduced a sippy cup to S yet. Our pedi said we don't have to worry about that yet since he expects her to be off bottles when she's a year old, but not yet. He said we'd discuss what to expect with sippy cups at her 9 month.

  • I just give her one after meals with 1 oz of water to get familiar. She just plays with it and if water goes in her mouth she gets really pissy about it.

  • My doctor told us not to use sippy cups yet, which is disappointing because NUK has the most adorable minnie mouse one.  I might get it and put it away...

I keep seeing really cute ones too and we were told not to use them either. I think I'm gonna do the same thing and just put it away until we're ready to use it...
