Madeline- alternate spelling

My husband and I have agreed on the name Madeline if we have a girl (we still have another month to go before we find out the sex). HOWEVER, I do not like the original spelling. Normally, I'd be all for it because it's such a classic name (and very uncommon in our area). But, I don't like it for a couple reasons: 1) I want the name to be pronounced MadeLYNN not MadeLINE. 2) The main reason!: both of our first names end with an 'n' & the boy name we have picked out does as well, so I want the girl name to also do so. That may sound crazy to some but that's just the way my mind works and I would go insane & regret it the rest of my life if all of the names weren't 'uniform' so to speak.
So, my question is: which alternate spelling should we go with? Madelynn, Madelyn, or Madelinn (the LINN does come from the combination of the 2 grandma's first names so it is kind of special but I know it's the most uncommon of the 3).
I know some of you are going to throw fits about spelling it 'wrong', say that it's always going to have to be corrected for people, etc. but, I don't care. My mind is made up and I have my reasons. I have a common name w/ the most common (pretty much only) spelling and still have to spell it for people all the time. I've seen Madelynn and Madelyn both listed as alternate spellings on other baby name sites so they're not completely unheard of either. & I figure that as long as I'm not going to extremes with it, like Mahddahllyhnn, it should be okay.
I'm just asking for opinions on which one flows better/ looks prettier/ etc.
Thanks in advance, everyone!

Re: Madeline- alternate spelling

  • Madeleine can be pronounced either Mad-uh-leen or Mad-uh-lyn.  Use that spelling.

  • If you have to misspell a name because you are worried about people mispronouncing it, then you should choose a new name. Sorry, but it is a major pet peeve of mine. There are so many names out there, including ones that end in n, that you should choose a new one if you don't like the traditional spelling.

One of my acquaintances named her daughter Adeline and spelled it Adelyn for the same reason. I definitely side eyed her for that.
  • Of your choices, I would pick Madelyn.
  • Madelyn seems to be the winner so far. Thanks to you who voted!
Madeleine is not an option. I do not like it at all, for whatever reason. & it does not serve the purpose that were looking for, to get away from Madeline.
I am not solely changing the spelling just for the pronunciation.. it's just a bonus.
The spellings I have chose are not 'wrong' or made up off the top of my head and completely new, especially 'yn' & 'ynn' which are both fairly popular.
For example, Katherine and Kayley are both names I know several people with and I honestly do not think that one of them is spelled the same yet I wouldn't consider any of them 'wrong' or 'too unique'.
I have looked at thousands and thousands of names, ending and not ending with 'n' and I don't like any of them near like I do Madeline.
I know no matter what we name our child, boy or girl, their name will be mispronounced and misspelled more than once in their life. My husband and I both have common, simple names (first middle and last) and still run into it from time to time. It's inevitable. I just wanted others opinions on which one they liked best.. mostly it comes down to which one looks prettier on paper since they're otherwise the same.
  • But...you are changing the spelling to get the pronunciation you want.

Madelyn is the made-up Americanized spelling of Madeleine.  It was changed to that spelling so Americans would say "lynne" at the end of the name instead of le-eyeen (which is how you would pronounce "leine" in American phonics)

It's like the name Sean.  Sean is the origional.  The names Shaun and Shawn are Americanized spellings so that Americans don't say it "seen".

Look, it's your kiddo...so this is more of an FYI post.  You seem to have your mind made up.

  • Madelyn, if you must, though I prefer Madeline. The Madeline I grew up with pronounced it Mad eh lyn, and pretty much never had a problem with it.

Also, I have trouble with this too, but you may want to make an effort to make your posts less wordy. It makes iy seem like you are on a rant, and it is unlikely that people will read it all.
  • Sorry, not on a rant. I just wanted to make our reasoning clear, so people could understand where we were coming from. I always like to have some extra insight when helping people out with decisions.
The pronunciation isn't the concern with us. I could handle correcting people from time to time. Our main reason is because of the 'n'. Again, I know it's silly to some but that's why I tried to explain our choices in the first post.
  • Look, if the alternative spelling Madelyn bothers you that much, and you MUST end the name with an "n" pick another name.

If the spelling Madelyn is acceptable to you, just use that.

  • I intentionally read, and sometimes say, MADE-lyn when I see it spelled Madelyn.

    But I'm snarky like that.

  • Madelyn. The other two, especially Madelinn, look cray.

  • I completely understand your reasoning!  I think any of the three would totally work, but I'd lean a little more towards Madelyn (it seems a little more girly than Madelynn, which would also work, but I also love family names!) I don't think the pronounciation will be a problem, because most of the time, a person is introduced verbally, and the pronounciation is what sticks.
  • I don't prefer it over Madeline, but I've posted before about knowing a few Madelyns and I think it's totally fine.

  • DD's middle name is spelled Madelyn. So I'd recommend that!
  • I like this name. We contemplated it. I like it pronounced Made-lynn as well but I however like the Madeline spelling.

In your case I think Madelyn for sure.

  • I don't know anyone who named their daughter Madeline & pronounced it MadeLINE. But as others have said if you must I'd choose Madelyn.

  • My vote would be to go with another name that ends in n. I love the look of Madeline, sorry. I feel like the spelling Madelyn (or whatever variant) takes away from how pretty the name is.

Well, there's a book series for children with a character who is pronounced Mad-uh-LINE. But IRL, 99% of people I've met pronounce it -lyn.

  • If Madeleine was an option - I would have chosen that.  Lovely (& real!) spelling.

This!!!  This spelling is the original/traditional spelling and it pronounced Madelynn.
