Mattress question

My H bought me a crib and changing table set for Christmas. Now he's looking at mattresses. I think he's a little excited. I'm a FTM, so those of you who have purchase a baby mattress before what would you recommend? Is a foam mattress safe for a baby?

    Agreed with Mullenem - Baby Bargains is an incredible resource. I just got mine and have been pouring over it!

    I honestly don't remember what kind of mattress we bought for DS but it wasn't a super expensive one and has worked just fine

    MIL bought our crib and insisted on the most expensive mattress in BRU. Her rationale was that we don't have a cheap mattress so why should the baby? I never would've spent hundreds of dollars on my own, but is works and DS sleeps great. He also sleeps great in the PnP when we travel and that's basically cardboard. So, I say check out some reviews and the Baby bargains book and pick something in your budget.

    The only real stipulation is it should be firm and supportive for an infant.

    I also got the cheap one from walmart. I love it so much. My dd sleeps great on it and it's really light so middle of the night sheet changes aren't horrific. I highly recommend it.
