Labored Breathing?

Good morning ladies and Happy Monday.

I wanted to ask if any of the ladies here are also feeling the same way I am.  I'm 20 weeks TODAY!  Yay! But as of late I come to realize that towards the end of the day, especially just before bed I feel like when I take a breath I need to make an effort to take a deep breath.  It feels like something is sitting on my chest.  I have mild asthma that's brought on by allergens. mold and cat dander but I haven't been exposed to any of that as of late.  I read that the baby if he or she is being carried high can affect my diaphragm. But I don't know what carrying high looks like and if this is normal or something else.  I go see my OB tomorrow for my A/S and will talk to her about that then.  Just for now I wanted to see if any other ladies have gone through this or was it just me?

Re: Labored Breathing?

  • This has been happening to me for a while now, but I've been chalking it up to anxiety because the baby isn't squishing my lungs yet.  With DS it happened much later.  I asked my doctor about it and he wasn't concerned.  For me, it feels like I can't satisfy a yawn...like get that good, nice, deep breath.  It's really annoying.

  • I feel this way, too..but it's been an ongoing thing for me, for about five years, so it's not pregnancy-related, but it has intensified since I've been pregnant. If anyone figures out what causes it, I'd love to know! It's a pretty terrible feeling.

  • Your heart is working harder, pumping more blood which can cause the breathless feeling. At least that's what I've read, and it's completely normal. I've had days here and there where I've felt out of breath since around 8wks. It comes and goes and I just chaulk it up to my body working harder to help baby grow, and of course the uterus keeps growing higher. Bring it up at your next appointment, but I wouldn't be too worried.

  • I was having this exact feeling for the first time last night. Like I couldn't get a deep enough breath. Let us know if your OB gives any tips to help this sensation. I tried laying on my left side to help blood flow but it didn't seem to make a difference.

  • Yes I've definitely been feeling more short of breath for the past few weeks or so (18 weeks 3 days) and my heart feels like its beating much harder now. I would chalk it up to the fact that at 20 weeks your insides are already getting more squished from the baby, and also to the fact that your heart has to work harder to pump all the extra blood and oxygen through your body.
  • I read that as well.  It just seems so surreal when I'm laying there and have to make myself take a deep breath else I feel like I'm a fish out of water taking short breath.  Don't get my started on how half what I usually eat at a meal makes me feel like I just pigged out at a Vegas buffet.  I can eat something for lunch and feel full at dinner time.  SO uncomfortable that my insides are getting squished.  @katemr1146, I'll let you if my OB has any tips to deal with it.
  • Do you have any pain along with the shortness of breath? When I have a bad acid reflux flare up, sometimes it hurts to take a deep breath, and feels like I can't quite do it.

But like @melissamello said, your heart is working harder and your blood volume has increased a lot, even when you're in good shape this can make you get out of breath easier. I know for me, climbing the stairs to get to work in the morning now pretty much feels like the hardest thing in life.

  • @bootsie327, no pains or anything just feels like something is sitting on my chest.  I was a pretty active person, but walking up the stairs nearly puts me out of breath.  My husband finds it amusing to hold my hand and then jog up the stairs at the parking structure.  Until I hit him with a shopping bag after I caught my breath.
  • I've felt this way for the past week or so. (Almost 19 weeks with twins.) Everyone keeps tells me it's because of all the extra blood flow, but I do know that Twin B is positioned rather high up on my left side. I'm thinking that may be part of it too, because I'm measuring 7 weeks ahead of a singleton pregnancy.
