BLW check in

What's new?

So on Friday while I was at work, my mom gave them some mango slices (which they'd had before), and V bit off a piece and it got stuck in her throat. My mom had to take her out of the chair and turn her over and it came out. She told my husband about it when he got home, and then she left to go home for the weekend. I didn't find out until Saturday afternoon when I was texting my mom a picture of them eating more stupid mango slices! I confronted DH and he said he forgot to tell me. He just seems to be very blasé about it all, which really upsets me. Now that we have teeth, they're biting off chunks of raw fruits and vegetables that they can't yet chew very well (mango, cucumber, etc.) and have had some trouble with them so I'm going to stop giving them these things until they get more teeth.

They did try some new stuff. They had spinach (I added a little bit of butter and some nutmeg) and E seemed to love it! They also had lentils (some just on the tray, some mashed on toast), and for breakfast yesterday I made banana pancakes with oats and flax meal. For dinner last night I made turkey meatballs and a spicy homemade pasta sauce. E loved that too; V was less enthusiastic but she'd just woken up and nursed so maybe she just wasn't feeling it.

Here's E eating spinach by the handful and V opting for her high chair strap instead of her pancake.

Re: BLW check in

  • C recently got over a tummy bug so she just started eating solids again. Before getting sick she was doing great! She would use her bottom two teeth to shave off food and would eat about half of what we'd give her, which was awesome. Now she is cutting her top two teeth so she'll be an eating machine once those suckers come in! We've been giving her 3 meals a day for a couple weeks now, which is more stressful and gives me a lot more cleaning to do, but since she eats a good amount at all these so I know it's worth it. Most recent foods she loves are tomatoes, rice, clementines and black bean burgers :)

  • Wow, @LizzyG11, three meals a day, that's great! I'm glad C is feeling better now.

  • Let's see, since last time I reported I think the new things are quesadilla (which she opens up and sucks the cheese out of - smart girl), guacamole and mac and cheese (the first thing I can definitively say went in and didn't end up back out on herself/me/the floor).  We are still kind of hit or miss with when she gets solid foods.

  • @PumpkinAndThePeanut how did you prepare the spinach and what consistency was it? Was is leaves or shredded? C hates leafy things but I really want to give her some spinach! Also those photos are so adorable :) they seem to be happy eaters!

  • We have been doing three meals a day this past week and he is always excited to find out what he's going to be offered. There have been several times where he gets really disappointed that it is not what he's expecting though, lol. Things he did not like this week include steamed green peppers and a revisit to steamed squash. He's not a big fan of steamed things as a whole because he loves to either use his teeth to shave food or suck juices out and he can't really do either when it's steamed. Like @pumpkinandthepeanut said, I do it as a safety measure because he does get big chunks when he bites and I like to avoid that. But he loves raw apples (not the source of the rash I mentioned last week, yay!), and hates them steamed or baked or mashed. So I just watch him carefully. Also with cucumber (which is a definite favorite) I always cut off the harder outer portion so that what he has is just the soft inside. I also take as many of the seeds out as I can.

New things he loved this week are cornmeal pancakes, french toast, and an asian pear.

Here is his hatred for green pepper

  • @kashy did you make your own sauce or use a jarred sauce? We have always bought jarred but I'm thinking that has too much sodium(?) and have been meaning to find a recipe that I could use.

I always make a meat sauce.  I did use a jar sauce this time.  I was worried at first about too much sodium but he never really ate enough to be too much.  I am going to try and find a from scratch recipe to use for future tho.

Edit to clarify:  I always add ground beef/turkey to a jar sauce. That is what I did last night.

@LizzyG11, I just used chopped frozen spinach. I steamed it in the microwave, and added a little butter and some nutmeg for flavor. They picked it up in little handfuls. I also gave them spinach and chopped frozen kale in an omelette last weekend.

  • @Trish625, I made my own sauce last night. It was easy, tasty and I sneaked in some extra veggies. Do you want the recipe? I just chucked stuff in, so it wasn't terribly precise but I can probably recreate it.

    Absolutely! :)
  • OK, @Trish625, here's my pasta sauce "recipe."

    - 1 large can of plain stewed tomatoes (I got mine at Whole Foods - the ingredients were organic tomatoes and organic tomato paste).
    - Half a carrot, peeled and grated
    - 1 red bell pepper, seeded and chopped
    - About 1/4 of a white onion, chopped
    - 3 cloves of garlic, chopped
    - chopped mushrooms
    - olive oil
    - dried herbs to taste (I used oregano, black pepper, celery seed, and red pepper flakes)

I put the onions and garlic and a little olive oil in a heavy saucepan and let them brown.

Next, I added the chopped red pepper and carrot until softened.
Then I added the can of stewed tomatoes, the mushrooms, and the herbs, turned to low heat and let simmer for about 45 minutes.

I added a fair amount of red pepper flakes so mine was quite spicy. But V and E didn't seem to mind the spice so they must be used to the taste from my breast milk.

The key was finding that can of plain stewed tomatoes.  I'm also planning to make an enchilada sauce with these later this week. Who has time for peeling/seeding/chopping tomatoes!?

  • Thanks, @cromie713. Yeah, my mom is pretty awesome. I made her take an infant CPR class when she started watching the girls, so she knew what to do. I'm glad she didn't panic. She hasn't been too enthused about BLW but she's coming around (and now this happened!) :(

I almost didn't tell you all that the choking incident happened, because I am sure we'll have someone with a UO or FFFC later this week confessing that they think BLW is dangerous and stupid..... But then I decided that the point of this check in is for support and honesty, so I put it out there.

  • @sct728 - I don't have any advice about the reaction to the egg, but I'm glad it went away. I would also hold off on offering egg again until after you've talked to the pedi. Although I've heard that some people only offer the yolk at first, because the whites are more common allergens.

  • What did you ladies do for first BLW foods? My husband was super nervous about it so I've made mashes & purees for the past month & a half but want to try some larger, softer foods.

  • @nech0606 - your pictures of your LO this week are adorable! She looks so happy.

  • @kcbearc - our first foods were fingers of ripe banana and ripe avocado. If you've been doing purees for a while, your LO will be used to sucking and swallowing, not chewing.  Others might disagree, but I might start with Cheerios if your LO has the pincer grip down pretty well. Cheerios are small and melt in the mouth pretty well so they'd present little choking risk.

Or I'd just start with very ripe avocado, banana, or sweet potatoes roasted to the point where they mush well when smushed between your thumb and forefinger. Maybe others have some better ideas?

  • Oh yeah I second the mashed foods or hummus on toast sticks. He loves anything on toast!

Our first was toast fingers with garlic herb cheese.

  • @PumpkinAndThePeanut You weren't kidding about tomatoes being hard to find without added salt and sugar! I had to settle for some organic crushed tomatoes in tomato puree and they have added sea salt. Argh. I was at Marianos and I thought they might have a bigger selection, but no.
  • @NailQueen, we've done smashed lentils on toast, and the BLW cookbook has a recipe for a bean dip you could spread on toast. Guacamole would work too. You could even purée some vegetables and spread that on.

@Trish625, I know, I was shocked to find that can at Whole Foods. They also had it in a jar but the can was a lot cheaper. This is the can I got if you have a Whole Foods near you.image

  • Sorry for the late check-in!  We've been more adventurous lately with trying new foods.  This week L has tried zucchini, cauliflower, green beans, bell pepper, beef, and chicken.  I love how much he likes his veggies.  We made fajitas for our dinner and cooked some up on the side for him without spices.  He loved the beef strips!  I think I'll cut them thicker next time so that he can just suck on them without breaking off chunks that he can't chew.  He doesn't have any teeth, but it's amazing what those gums can do.

I finally bought the BLW cookbook.  We still need to introduce new foods before we start using it, but I think it has great ideas for foods with few ingredients and low salt.
