Special Needs

@auntie (or anyone well versed in asd)

So we have always been open to the possibility of three children. I've been pretty adamant for a while I've been done but I've always said I'd keep an open mind about it when the kids are school age. Naturally our recent dx has thrown a wrench in those plans. I know kids with asd can start off typical or closer to it and have a huge regression at some point when they lose their skills and become more severely autistic. Is there a certain age this generally happens by? If dd is still a mildly affected kiddo in the early grade school years can I assume she'll be mildly affected or at age 6, 12, etc could she have some massive regression that puts her in the more profoundly affected category?

  • No clue about a regression timeline, although our kids are past most of the anecdotal stuff I've seen.

Any kid can suffer an accident and end up severely impaired at any time. There are no guarantees.

We've kind of done the reverse. We've already been through genetics and ruled out fragile x and did the microarray--normal results. There is some genetic predisposition to anxiety disorders/ADHD/language disorders on my side--no autism on either side though. Parental age isn't a factor--I was in my twenties with both my children and am still a number of years away from AMA.
