Supplementing with formula - how many oz?

Hi everyone! My DS will be 9 months on the 22nd. He was EBF and now gets breast milk and solids. I'm just not pumping enough to keep up and my freezer stash is gone. I'm thinking that I'll supplement one bottle a day on those days I don't pump enough. Is that OK to do? Or do I need to commit to always a bottle a day now. Also, how do I know how many oz that bottle should be? I know formula fed babies typically take larger bottles so how does that translate when supplementing? If I pump enough he takes two 5 oz bottles and one 4 oz bottle plus solids while at daycare from 7:30 - 4.

Thanks in advance!

  • Can you mix it with your BM instead? I just started doing that and she took to it very well. We did an extra ounce from what her normal bottle size would be. I didn't want to go too crazy and then have to dump it.

  • I'm a clueless FTM, too, so I'm appreciative of an insight, so thank you. :-) My LO is gaining weight well, but I just don't respond to the pump as well anymore. I hate that thing! @RedHead0917 - that's a good idea to mix with BM so he's more apt to take it. So I could do one all BM bottle and two that are part BM and part formula. Is that what you do?
  • I would only do it when you don't pump enough and make them the same amount as you BM bottle.

I EP and don't make enough so LO gets 4 oz bottles. 1/2 formula and 1/2 BM. He is 5 1/2 months.

  • This is very helpful! Thank you very much. I'm going to stick with the same size bottles. I don't mind if he nurses more when we're together. I just need to keep him satisfied at daycare without effecting what supply I have left, so that's a good idea.

It's also nice to hear from others who have needed to do the same thing, because I was feeling like I failed a bit. Thanks again, ladies!

I got my period back at 8 months, I think that may have been why. I always had a lower supply and I think my body was just tired of the pumping. Either way, you definitely didn't fail! And supplementing didn't affect our nursing in any way, we're still going strong at almost 17 months. Good luck!

^^ This makes me so happy...to know it didn't affect your nursing. I hope the same is true for us. Thanks again for the
