Birth Center vs. Hospital

Hello Mommies, My husband and I are moving back to SA from Corpus (HOOORAY!!!) and as a result, we are researching options now. Have any of you given birth at the San Antonio Birth Center or Birth Center Stone Oak? This is our first and I thought I wanted to be in the hospital but the more we talk about it, the more we think that a natural birth in a more intimate setting might be more suitable. We haven't taken a tour of either yet but we will eventually. Just want to see what kind of experiences other women have had in a birth center as opposed to a hospital setting.

Re: Birth Center vs. Hospital

  • I don't really have any advice, but this board seems to be kind of quiet I'm a newb here too, so I just wanted to respond and say hello and welcome.

I had my LO at Mission Trail Baptist on April 11. I was happy with the experience. They made every effort to accommodate my wishes. I don't really know about the other hospitals or birth centers.

  • I gave birth at North Central Baptist at Stone Oak. Wonderful staff. I loved the experience at the hospital. I will be having our next one at that hospital when that time comes.

  • I've only had hospital births but I would so do a birth center birth if I had the chance. I've given birth at St. Luke 's twice. I was happy with my first birth there. My second birth wasn't very positive, the nurses in LD were horrible and I felt like they didn't listen to me at all and I felt bullied by the nurses. To be fair my daughter was born 30 minutes after we walked in the Emergency Room door. I would go with a birth center where the midwives are all experienced with natural birth if that's what you're planning on.
  • I would be very cautious with a birth center.  They are fantastic if everything goes smoothly,  but are unable to deal with emergencies.  Since you don't always know until it is too late, I would recommend a hospital like St Lukes that tries to take into account your wants and natural births!

  • @ AJansse Did you end up going to the Birth Center or Hospital?

My hubby and I definitely want to go with the natural route. But since this is our first, I am not sure on how to proceed with choosing a good Midwife and Birth Center. I definitely want a Midwife who is licensed as a CNM (certified nurse-midwife).

  • I just posted in your other post but you may want to contact a few doulas and see whom they recommend. They attend a lot of births at all different places. If you want to go the hospital route but don't want to do St. Lukes they can probably recommend some more natural birth friendly OB/gyns
