3rd Trimester

Is it time.....

Hey ladies, Just a few questions that I need some help with. Currently, I am 40 +1 weeks prego with what we expect to be a large 9-10 lb baby girl. This is my first pregnancy so I am not exactly sure what to expect about labor. Last Thursday, I thought I had lost all of my mucus plug (dark reddish looking thing), had a sweep on Friday, but have continued to bleed for 4 days (today being the fourth) I realized this morning that I guess I didn't lose all my plug and am continuing to lose it. Is it normal to continue having a bloody show for multiple days? I knew I was going to be bleeding after the sweep but I didn't realize how much...and its like every time I use the restroom (which is a lot) I have some blood. Sorry for TMI. Also, I am having severe menstrual cramps with contractions every 20-30 mins or so and having SEVERE low back pain throughout the day/nght. Am I getting close to labor?? I am also slightly worried about the blood. I figured it would be gone by now. please help. Thanks.

Re: Is it time.....

  • No TMI here. You can lose your MP at any point & spotting/bleeding after a membrane sweep is not uncommon.

Give your OB a call if your bleeding is worrisome for you. Unfortunately we can't really tell you what to expect for labor.

With DD my water broke & mucus plug came out at the same time. 4 hours later she was out.

With DS I had a membrane sweep but the OB had to break my water when I made it to 9cm.

Everyone, & every pregnancy is different. Good luck!

  • The cramps have been going on since Thursday and my doctor told me on friday that that was normal because I was having my bloody show and she was doing the sweep. Unfortunately my doc is out of town until tomorrow so I was not going to be able to get a hold of her until then. I may call the hospital/birthing unit to see what they think. the contractions started yesterday afternoon and have not increased in time intervals and they are only lasting for about 45 secs max.
  • I lost My plug gradually over a 4 or 5 day span. I was having contractions 20 minutes apart 4 days before delivery, but they were irregular. I assume they were braxton hicks contractions. Theyd be consistently 20-24 minutes apart for a fews hours. Than i would get a break. a few hours of no contractions. This went on for 2 full days, then all of a sudden they were 10 minutes apart with no "breaks" and continued this way until my water broke the next day. That's when things really sped up :0)
