Drink til its pink?

Hey ladies,

I've heard the debate so much but I want to hear YOUR thoughts and experiences. When the time came when you were TTC, did you stop drinking all together or did you still drink socially? I'm really torn...I love my wine ;-)

My husband and I did the deed w/out any form of protection when we were on vacation last week. My periods have been all over the place (28 days to 40) due to going off of BC a few months ago, so who knows if it was actually "the" window (I will start tracking soon). We're kind of just letting fate happen at this point and will get more serious about TTC in the upcoming months. Anyway, I highly doubt I'm pregnant because I know it's a rarity for it to happen the first month, but I know never say never.

With the holidays around the corner and a lot of social gatherings, I really want to have a glass or two of wine. I've been having a glass with dinner since we've returned home and I can't help but feel guilty about it. I'm absolutely not over-indulging, but I don't know what the right thing to do is. Plus, if we TTC for a very long time, I can't imagine having this internal debate with myself and not being able to enjoy here and there.

I know there's not ONE right answer, but would love to hear your own experiences. Thanks!

Re: Drink til its pink?

  • Not TTC yet, but I plan on following the "drink til it's pink." What if I don't get pregnant for a year? That's a long time to go without my beloved wine for no good reason :)

  • Until I got a BFP, I drank.

  • Haha Jags8 - my thoughts exactly!!
  • I had a ginormous glass of wine the night before my BFP the first go around, so yeah...the rule I followed was "everything in moderation" and I tried to stick to 1-2 drinks and step down from having a drink every night or so to just a few each week. I also pretty much avoided the hard stuff, but I'm a beer and wine gal anyway.

I made some exceptions to my rules, because you have to live and TTC can be grueling, so some nights I needed extra booze to make me feel better. I felt good about my choices and didn't have any "OMG what if I hurt my baby" moments after my BFP!

  • I followed drink 'til it's pink, and I had the occasional single drink while KU (about 3 separate drinks each pregnancy).

  • See siggie. I sure as hell didn't give up alcohol for all that time - the only time I did was my IVF cycle at the request of my clinic.

If you regularly binge or drink til drunk/hung over it might be good to knock it off while TTC, but a few drinks will hurt no one.

  • I did not hive up drinking while TTC. I'm glad, since it didn't end up happening for me. I say live your life (responsibly) while TTC.

  • I am definitely in favor of the drink til it's pink motto .. I won't go crazy and get drunk in the TWW but a few drinks seems fine to me. Like pp said, not gonna live like I'm pregnant until I am!

  • Hi Ladies! I am pretty new to this board (and the idea of trying to plan a pregnancy) but I am loving this thread and the attitudes here.
Who knows how long it could take to get pregnant? Everything in moderation, right?

  • Def drink until it's pink!  Love my wine and my date nights too much ;)

  • I'm not a big drinker (maybe a wine cooler once every other month and hard alcohol 3-6 times a year) so not drinking isn't a change for me. I do plan to drink over Christmas and New Years with my family if I don't get a BFP this cycle.

  • There was definitely Captain Morgan residue in the bfp pee every time for me. I gave up alcohol for almost the first year ttc and finally decided I couldn't take it. Still took another year to get pregnant with ds1.
  • I have not stopped drinking while TTC, I do cut back some in the 2WW and if I plan on drinking anytme after 8 DPO I ususally take a test first. Thats just my preference though definitely a person choice. Figure out what works for you.

Wine coolers?! That brings back memories of being 17! lol

Yeah, I know... I just don't like wine (I know, I'm an outcast now since I've admitted it) or beer.

  • We haven't even started trying and I am already team drink till its pink! I have a strong Kahlua and milk on Monday nights to put me to sleep.... for about 10 hours. Hahah. Every other month I get drunk enough to stumble back to the apartment but I always feel fine in the morning. When TTC I probably wont drink any differently than I do now.

  • Drinking wine right now and I'm likely ovulating!  So I will certainly keep drinking it until I see pink.

  • Definitely Drink Til Its Pink.  With DS, I went through my sister's bachelorette party, Christmas, New Year's Eve, and my sister's wine tasting shower before realizing I was 6 weeks pregnant.

Really, the embryos aren't tied to your blood stream until implantation at about 4 weeks.  My midwife said that she was not concerned about alcohol consumed prior to me realizing I was pregnant.

  • A lot of women just cut out alcohol during their two week wait. My period always gave me a little more freedom to have fun guilt free if I wanted to. I still drank during the TTW. Just not as much. It took us a year and a half to conceive. I couldn't imagine going without a good cold Bud for that long.

  • You will likely experience an aversion to alcohol early in pregnancy anyway, so I don't think you should stop until you have a positive hpt, or an aversion. I still had an occasional glass of wine with dinner during the last couple months of my last 2 pregnancies,, but that's just me. I never drank more than one at a time, and my kiddos are healthy and strong and smart! No worries :)
