Does anyone dye their hair?

Ive read a lot that says its okay... but Im still worried about it. Before looking it up, its always been something I thought definitely not allowed. But, even though Im only 28, my hair is dark dark brown, almost black, and my greys are shiny and white, best way to describe them - tinsel. I havent dyed since October and its really really bad... need to figure out a way to hide them. Everyones going to suspect at Christmas just based on that, and were not ready to share until 12 weeks at least. And I dont go to my actual doctor to ask until Thursday. What is everyones experience? And any suggestions for maybe a better option.

Re: Does anyone dye their hair?

  • I wouldn't dye it.  Can you put your hair up at Christmas so your roots don't show and add lots of curls to distract from the tinsel?

  • Can you get that hair mascara stuff. No idea what its called sorry.

  • I dye mine but thankfully my hairdresser did very grow-out friendly highlights last time and I think I can get by without looking extremely awful.  My sister colors her pregnant clients' hair with some brand that doesn't smell as bad as some.

  • I will color my hair. I know a lot of people who have done it and they've had perfectly healthy babies. If you were concerned, you could do highlights instead of full color, it would be less chemicals touching your scalp.
  • Can you get it done by a professional? I'm getting foils but the color doesn't touch my skin. Then you also won't have all the fumes from poor ventilation. Otherwise I wouldn't do it myself. Try switching your part or wearing a pretty hairstyle.

  • I highlighted the day before my BFP. Oops! But I was told last go around that it's ok if you are in a WELL ventilated area. They also suggested to wait until second tri after vital organs were formed. I'm pretty sure I did some dying last time, but can't remember if it was first tri or not.

  • My niece is a hair stylist and pregnant with her first. Though she hasn't been exposed on the scalp, she has bee exposed to the fumes regularly. Her doc was not concerned. She suggested, if I do want to color my hair to use a vegetable based dye that is safe during pregnancy. This is what she has used on herself since BFP.

  • I haven't dyed my hair since September and it's really getting bad. I am 28 also but plenty of grays. They are very noticeable whether my hair is up or down, but I am waiting at least until I'm out of 1st tri. I'm still nervous about it though, so I'm going to ask my hairdresser if there's something without all the harsh chemicals that she can use.

  • Sure am. I wait until the second trimester but than do all over color. I did it with my first as well. I definitely stretch it for as long as possible but I go. My hair dresser uses a different due on me when I'm pregnant than when I'm not.

  • My doctor said it was fine. Hair dye isn't as harsh as it used to be.
  • Ive been doing a ponytail and wide headband for a while now but theyre still noticable (plus I work a 13 hr shift and sometimes all those ponys give me such a sore scalp). I didnt think about calling the hairdresser to see if they had any alternatives to the regular stuff. Ill give that a try.
  • I had my hair done on Thursday. Highlights and low-lights.

  • I got mine highlighted yesterday as well, and my hairdresser has two young kids :) They use Redken which has pretty well zero smell...I wouldn't use box dye. But I wouldn't when I wasn't pregnant either ;)

  • I've heard it actually isn't that bad for you as long as you are still getting fresh air. you could also try an ammonia-free gloss... It would hide the grey, but without all the chemicals. I had great results with Garnier gloss when I was trying to grow out some brassy highlights and get back to my natural color.

  • Dye my hair once every 6 weeks. Every doctor at my practice says it's fine
  • Just ventilate the room!! That's a must even if you're not pregnant
  • I dyed my hair about two or three weeks ago.  I made a post on here and asked people including my doctor's office.  They said as long as it was ammonia-free and you didn't breathe in the fumes, you were pretty much safe since there is so little actually absorbed into the skin.  I also read an OB on the internet saying if you feel like if your baby was born with a defect that you would blame dying your hair (or anything you felt was "wrong") then don't do it.

  • Done it twice since getting my BFP.

  • I had my hair done about a month ago. My stylist just made sure nothing touched my scalp. I didn't even notice any fumes, and never really have with what she uses on my hair.

  • My doctor said to wait until 6 months. It is so hard to wait :( I keep looking at Pinterest for ideas when I'm finally allowed to do it.
  • I'm a hairdresser. I'm waiting until after my first trimester. Even though I work around chemicals and color , I'm make sure it doesn't get on my skin. I would suggest hair mascara, if your hair is dark ,it will just blend. You can even use regular eyelash mascara.
  • I'm a hair dresser. I color my hair plus get it on my skin a lot, the same with perms. The only reason it was ever said not to perm or color your hair is because of your changing hormones. You might get a slightly different result because of all the changes you are going through. if you are that worried about you could use a semi permanent color that has no ammonia. Be aware a true ammonia free gloss or color would not cover your grey just blend it.(better than nothing) so any at home ammonia free color that promises "full coverage" you should be wary of if you are worried about chemicals. Good luck to you. My doctor said it was fine for me to continue all services and nothing bothers me. IMO cover up those greys and don't sweat it!

  • I'm the same, 30, dark brown/black hair, very obvious grays. I could not go without coloring my hair. It's not on my list of don'ts from the doctor. I've done root color twice and highlights once so far. As long as it's well ventilated, you're fine.

  • I'm 37 and will be 12w5d when I go on saturday to get my roots done. I made it through the first trimester! I'll try to stretch it out too so as not to go every 6 weeks like before, maybe 2 months or so.
  • I use a henna dye that's cocoa butter based, so it's super moisturizing and has no harmful chemicals.
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • It's not only the fumes of hair due that are dangerous. Your hair is fed oxygen from your blood stream and when you dye your hair the ammonia gets into your blood stream.
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • I usually dye my hair but when I'm pregnant I avoid it. Usually my hair gets really dry when I'm pregnant and the dye makes it worse. Plus, I'm scared the chemicals will do something to my pregnancy (even if doctor says its okay).
