June 2013 Moms

hypoallergenic formula mom.

What formula is your LO on and why did you put them on it?

LO is on Nutrimagen due to FTT from EBF. Everytime he poops, he's but gets red and blister like where ever the poop touches him. I asked the Pedi about it and he said that it's not an milk allergy because I would see a rash all over his body. I got the thinking, my other two kids were on Neocate formula because they had MSPI and it only showed up in the stomachs and not as a rash. I'm wording if maybe I should consult with a GI doctor or switch formula to see if he does any better. I have two different oitments that the Pedi gave us and it helps.

Re: hypoallergenic formula mom.

  • No experience with formula but ds1 had a milk protein intolerance. I ended up cutting out all dairy but the ped said that if I couldn't be extremely careful about not ingesting dairy he would have to go on a necocate formula. Apparently nutramigen and similar ailmentum do have milk in it.

  • We have a Neocate prescription but I just modify my diet because that crap is expensive!
Her only symptom is blood in her poop so I'm not sure about the rash.

Yea, Nutramigen has casein protein which is a milk protein. It's a "modified" version... Whatever that means. If your little one is really sensitive to dairy it may not be the perfect choice. Maybe ask your doctor about that or contact Nutramigen's customer service to see how exactly its modified and what it means dairy wise.
Its means that the proteins are broken down more than in regular formula. We go to the Dr. Thursday, so I'm going to bring it up again.

I just told DH that I'm going to ask the Dr. to test for blood and ask to see a GI Dr.

also if you every need the Neocate. Ask your insurance about covering the cost of it, some times they will.

  • @RedCherry1109 my stupid insurance refuses to cover it :( I'm still arguing with them about it. Also, we didn't need to test for blood, we were getting dime sized clumps, it was really visable but sometimes if the poop is really mucousy that can mean there is blood hiding in there.

  • @ChelsRy1 - That sucks! Yes, he had some mucus and sometimes you can't see the blood. I guess we will see what the Dr. says Thursday and go from there. I just feel bad for LO because you can tell his bottom hurts when it broke out really bad.

  • That sucks :( the GI was actually surprised LO didn't have a butt rash because apparently that's really common with MSPI, I hope you get it figured out!

  • Not all allergies show up the same way so I'd push your doctor on it.
