I've been really excited to make the handprint ornaments all day. After fighting poor baby J to make recognizable hand prints in the dough (and a husband who was even crankier about it haha) we finally got three ... One great one and two decent ones.
I read you could microwave them instead of using the oven for hours, so... I did! Except in all my mommy brain genius I used a paper plate (less clean up right, especially since my two hands are as close to a dishwasher as we get) and sure enough....
It set itself on fire. I was cleaning the table up and my husband, who was holding the baby, exclaims "honey there is smoke pouring out of the microwave" I run over and unplug it and foolishly open the microwave door. And smoke begins billowing out. He's chasing the alarms. I'm throwing water and using a towel to fan the smoke out the window into the 7 degree outside... Thankfully the baby isn't losing his mind. It's well past boobie time at this point and well... I'm still out a handprint for grandma ... And I'm not willing to give her my good one that is air drying because I'm selfish and gun shy to cook the damn thing.

Moral of the story: don't microwave the salt dough ornaments on a paper plate.
I'm such a dumbass...
