Vicks . . .

My LO is stuffy, so I used my nose frieda, which helped. As my husband was getting him ready for bed, he put the tiniest bit of Vicks (not the baby kind) on his chest. I promptly googled it and found that it is harmful to young kiddos. He had no idea (it's his mom's go-to).

I wiped it off and changed his pajamas. Now I'm all worried. Does anyone know much about this?

Re: Vicks . . .

  • I think the issue was when grandparents applied it under an 18 month olds nose...it caused respiratory distress. I think if you didn't put it under the nose you will be okay.

They do make a baby rub for infants and young children...but different ingredients.

This. We use the baby non-medicated one and it works great. You washed it off so you should be good as pp said the concern was the respitory issue when baby is significantly exposed for a long period of time.

  • I've put Vicks on DD's chest and feet when she was 3 months, and now at 6 months (for colds). She's totally fine. I would worry about it.

  • I've always been told to put it on their feet w socks on before bed
  • I am sure it will be fine. But I would go out and get the baby version that is safe for them.
  • Thanks everyone! He's fine - I just had a moment of panic! We will definitely not be using it in the future!

@Shantxtell - Yes, I went to get the package right after my husband did that and saw the age limits, which is when we wiped it off and I went to google.

I'm actually going to tell my in-laws to never use it - my MIL is all about Vicks, so I need to make sure she doesn't put any on him when she's watching him thinking it's harmless!
