How many ounces of formula?

LO was taking both formula and BM since 4 months but this week we are completely weened minus one bottle of BM a day from the stash.

He drinks (5) 5-oz bottles a day and one 3.5 oz of BM. Plus oatmeal with fruit in the a.m. and some sort of veggie and fruit in the p.m.

My mom (you lives in another state and rarely see's LO) 'feel's he should be drinking 7-8 oz formula bottles by now.

I do know that he will not take more than the 3.5 oz of BM in the morning. We offer it as his first bottle and he just wont drink more than that. But how many oz's of formula is the norm for 7 months?

Daycare gives him 4 of his bottles and say that the forth bottle he rarely finishes.

Re: How many ounces of formula?

  • I switched from ep'ing to formula at 4 months. She has never taken more than 6 oz, max. Since she has started eating three meals a day, her formula intake has decreased to about 20-22 oz per day. I asked the pedi about the decrease, and she said it was normal when you have a good solids eater.

And she does STTN, so she is usually ragingly hungry when she wakes up.
On a side note, this is something that is curious to me with my LO. He STTN, going to bed about 7pm and waking at 5ish. He has always nursed first thing in the morning so I never knew how much he is eating. Now I offer a BM bottle first thing. I would think he would be really hungry but I can barely get him to take a 3 oz bottle first thing.

During the day, if I were to offer BM he would definitely take a 4.5-5 oz bottle. Just seems weird to me for him to only want 3 oz first thing in the morning.

  • I maybe the odd one here but my LO takes 8oz 5 times a day. He has a couple of tablespoons of food every morning and evening too. He went to being in 50% in weight to 10% at his 6 month appt. We where giving 6oz 5 times a day with an occasional 7oz bottle at that time. The doctor told use to increase what we give him. He eats every 3 hours when awake but goes 12 hrs at night. I didn't want to add a feeding at night. He is still a thin guy but happy and healthy. Rarely spits up. I guess every baby is different and if they are happy and healthy I wouldn't worry too much.

We just up'd DD's bottle from 5oz to 6oz, and she'll take anywhere from 4-5 bottles. She eats a 1-2 jars of food a day.
    Edit: C's schedule:
    8:30- 1st bottle
    12:00- 2nd bottle
    2:00- baby food
    4:00-3rd bottle
    7:00-4th bottle
    9:00-baby food
    10:00- 5th bottle

sometimes inbetween 12-4 she'll take another bottle.

We are at 5oz.  But sometimes an hour later they want a few ounces more.  Ive tried to give 7oz bottles, but they spit up. They are averaging 25-30oz a day.

At their 6m appt, the pedi told us that the new recommendation was 32oz of formula a day (up from 30 I guess), so we have to give them liquid vitamin D to supplement.

They get 1-2 jars of baby food a day.

  • I think it's going to vary from kiddo to kiddo. When S was going through her 6month growth spurt, she was eating 5oz at a time. Now, she's back to 3, sometimes 4oz every 2.5-3 hours. She's small though, so there's that. Either way there's no possible way she'd eat 7-8 oz at any one time.

  • Morning- she nurses
Lunch time- oatmel and a 3oz bottle of formula
Mid afternoon- 3oz breastmilk and 2oz formula
    Supper- veggies and cereal
    Bedtime- 7oz formula bottle.

  • Every baby is different so I wouldn't worry. My Ped recommends at least 24oz.

    7am - 5oz
    8:30 - approx 2.25oz of puréed fruit
    10am - 4oz
    1pm - 5-6oz
    4pm - 5-6oz
    5:30 - approx 2.25oz puréed veggies
    7:30 - 6-8oz

Total for the day is anywhere from 25-29oz

  • C drinks four 8-oz bottles per day. I wouldn't worry about the amount your baby is eating at any given time as long as the totals are enough and you're not having problems with frequency.

We do 6 oz bottles during the day and one 8 oz bottle before bed.

ETA: also solids 3x a day
  • My doctor had said at T's 6 month appointment that he should have at least 24 ounces of milk a day. I nurse him in the morning, after daycare, and before bed. During the day he also has 4 4 ounce bottles at daycare. For food during the day, he eats a step 2 fruit and veggie, a step 1 fruit with oatmeal. I keep thinking I should give him more than 4 ounces at a time, but he seems to be content with that much and sometimes doesn't finish the whole bottle all at once.
  • My LO is still regularly taking just 2-3oz at a time during the day and maybe 4-6oz at night after 5:00pm.

He isn't a big eater but he is a very healthy weight and is consistently in the 50% percentile.

I wouldn't listen to people who say babies have to eat a certain amount at a time.  I think babies are really good at self regulating how much food they need to eat, and if you just feed them on demand they will eat what is the right amount for them.

Babies aren't one size fits all :)

    9/10:00AM - Mashed fruit (4oz), 6oz + 2tb oatmeal
12/1PM - Veggie (4oz), 4-6oz (or we switch with dinner if we have her home...she gets a veggie at lunch with daycare)

  • S drinks 8 oz bottles - but he's been drinking way more than the recommended 32 oz of formula. He's now drinking about 32 oz now that he's getting solids twice a day. He's a bruiser :)
So I think you're fine with the amount of formula and solids.
