March 2014 Moms

Do the appointments ever get longer?

DH hasn't been attending the appointments because they're so quick and routine and I never have any questions.  I have one more appointment at the 4 week increment and then we're on to the every 2 week appointments!  Craziness...

I'm literally in and out after 15 minutes because all they're doing is looking in my file, checking to see if I have questions/concerns, listening to the HB, and measuring my belly.

Will this routine change at any point or is it pretty much like this until L&D?  Do they ever get to more poking or prodding?  (*with the exception of the glucose test appointment)

Re: Do the appointments ever get longer?

  • Around 35wks you usually get te Group B Strep test--it's a quick swab of your vag and anus. Fun, eh? It is really quick, though. Then at some point your OB might start cervical checks to see if you're dilating (if you want or you can choose not to). I think mine started this at 36 or 37wks.

Yeah--it was a surprise for me, too! It's not as bad as it sounds, though.

  • My appointments so far have been that quick, except if I have questions. DH goes anyway. He said he probably won't go every 2 weeks but will still go once a month. He likes hearing the heartbeat. :)

  • Mine would be quicker if he ever showed up on time so the last time I held him up for 30 to talk through some labor anxiety. And I am not getting "checked" at every appt after 35 weeks like before. Nope and nope!

    LOL!
  • Right now my appointments last no more than 5 minutes. Nurse checks my urine, weight and blood pressure. Then the doctor comes in, measures me, listens for the heart rate, asks if I have any questions and I'm done. They never really got longer. At 38w they started doing internal checks. Only had that done once before I went into labor.

  • This post makes me feel better bc my appointments have been exactly the same as the OPs. When do they start talking about labor? Or should I be bringing it up?

You need to bring up anything you want to talk about. OB appts stay this way until you deliver (unless your OB is super awesome)... This time around, the midwives I'm seeing are talking to me for an hour each appt about how I'm feeling and everything. It is so different to the OB, but I prefer it personally.

  • My midwife practice books LONG appointments (maybe an hour) for every visit.

First I see a nurse who does the BP urine weight etc. Then I see a midwife. We start in her office, not an exam room, and just chat about things. She brings up common aches and pains and questions and I can talk about whatever, including how I'm feeling emotionally. Usually we take about 15-20 minutes but LIS I think they book more time just in case. Then we go to the exam room and she does the measuring, the heartbeat, etc. This part is shorter. Overall the visit usually takes about 45 minutes.

I LOVE THIS because I feel so taken care of. I rotate visits among the midwives but because the visits are so long I feel I've become comfortable with all of them. Plus there's so much time for me to think of my little niggling questions that I've never had to call between visits.

Labor is coming up as a discussion topic soon, I think --- they have a whole list of discussion topics for each visit so I don't have to worry about bringing things up.

    Love. It.

Are NST's standard in normal pregnancies at the end? I had them once a week at the end with my twins but that could have been because of the fact I had twins and had already been in PTL (at 31 weeks). I think I started getting those around 34/35 weeks???

ETA - they were super boring and time consuming, too :P

  • NSTs are not standard. I will start them weekly at some point because I'm over 40.

  • Not really, if you are healthy and not experiencing anything unusual there is no need except perhpas you just wanting more "get to know you" time... check out midwives if you do.  In my experience they are a *tiny* bit less rushed and spend a few more moments with you.  Also, remember to have a list of questions with you at every apt. bc the care giver is in and out so quickly if you are likely to forget to ask your questions.

I'm 41 and will NOT receive NST's unless indicated for a reason other than my age.  I will not consent to them as there is no need based on my age.
  • I really miss short and easy appointments. Haha.
  • My dr's office is an hour and ten minutes away, so the quick 5-10 minute appt gets annoying lol. But not a fan of the anus swab. Had it done once, dr forgot to mention she was doing it as well lol
  • That sounds normal to me.

I don't think I could do the hour-long midwife "talking" appointments every time... that would drive me crazy!  I'm glad there's a range of care styles and that people are finding what works for them.

  • Be glad your appointments are short. That just means everything is fine and no one is wasting anyone's time!

This!  My OB was out ill a few weeks ago and the CNM saw me instead and I thought I was going to hurt myself to keep my eyeballs from rolling - she wanted to talk about my "hopes and fears about parenting" - really, she said hopes and fears.  I am so not a midwife patient.

Of course I want Levi to be cared for and watched!  don't want to miss work prior to my maternity leave that time is important!  oh well thanks for the headsup even though i didn't believe you

Haha, that's awesome.  I would have a hard time carrying on a conversation like that without laughing unintentionally.

  • I just found out I start 3x a week apt at 32 weeks. Mine are usually 30 to 45 min long. So far I have what they refer too as "the best type" of twins. I couldn't imagine moms with complications and having to go in more often than I am. Glad for all the checking but so much time at the docs. Dh has given up comming just because there's too many apt when you have to go in every other week:(
