I've read that most babies do the transition from 2 naps to 1 when they are 15-18m. My son is only 12.5m but for the past 4 days, he's acting like he wants to drop his first nap?
He's been on 2-nap schedule since 8 months, and we do the naps on schedule. He's a great napper - wake up at 6:30-7, 1st nap at 9:30 (1-1.5hr), 2nd nap at 2:30 (1.5hr), bed at 8:15-8:30. We stick with the same schedule every day and very rarely it doesn't work.
The past 4 days, however, he has changed.
Day 1: I put him down at 9:30am. He woke up after 10 minutes, babbling (not crying). I let him babble, then went in to rock him/sing to him. He would not go back to sleep.
Day 2: He again woke up after 10 minutes, babbling. This time, after 20 minutes, he went back to sleep and slept for his usual amt of time.
Day 3: He took his normal morning nap without any problems
Day 4 (today): Put him down at 9:30am, woke up after 10 minutes babbling, and wouldn't go back to sleep.
Is this a sign that he is ready to skip his first nap? I don't know if I should still put him down at 9:30 and let him nap for however long? Or try pushing back his first nap by 15-30 minutes? Or simply switch to a 1-nap schedule? I feel like he's too young to go down to 1 nap right now.

Re: 2 naps to 1 transition
It sounds like his schedule has not really changed, he's just taking longer to fall asleep. If he's not upset, I would just leave him in there and let him jabber if he wants. If he's falling asleep after only 20 minutes or so, that's a pretty big sign he still wants to nap.
My son makes a huge racket (repeating sounds and rolling around) for at least the first 15 minutes after I leave the room, and sometimes he messes around for 30-40 minutes before passing out. They are learning and experiencing so much right now that it may take longer to settle down even if they seem totally exhausted. Adults are the same way. I never fall asleep immediately either....the only difference is I lay still and read a book instead of loudly babbling incoherently
