Introducing formula; those that supplement and FF Moms please enter

This last week I started DD on 2 bottles a day (it so far has been half BM and half F) to get her used to it and also to start the weaning process (for a # of reasons). I also noticed she is tooting a ton but no poops yet for 2 days. I remember with DS a small adjustment phase but nothing big. Those that are doing both now... how long did it take for poops to adjust or if you are just FF... how many poops do you get?

I do both but mostly give formula due to low supply issues. It's been that way since the first week so not sure how long of an adjustment period. But my LO only has one BM a day, sometimes one every other.
ETA: if your worried about a BM you could try the old thermometer with Vaseline trick.

  • When I stopped BM all together DS was on Neosure cause that was what the NICU told me to feed him. He went 2 days & when he would go it was like paste. I couldn't take all the screaming so I gave him Karo syrup and then switched him to Gerber Gentle. Now he's going about one to two times a day. But he's still really gassy! I've tried Mylicon drops & Little Tummy's but nothing seems to help much.
  • DS is all FF now and goes every other day. When I switched him over to all formula (we did it gradually) it took a good week for his system to adjust. He had a few harder poops so the pedi told us to offer one ounce of prune juice per day and that helped.

  • Took LO about two weeks to adjust. We put 1 oz of pear juice in her am bottle to help the process along. She now only poops once a day as opposed to every diaper when she was on BM.

  • LO is ff. For a good month we had 1 poopy diaper a day, lately it has been 2+ she is 8 weeks. I think they have transitioning formula (similac maybe?)

This. They were hard earned poops too.

  • LO is only FF now, she gets gerber soothe. She has between 1-2 BM a day
  • We've been slowly introducing formula to LO for the last several weeks. First, it was about one 2 oz. bottle at night and now we're probably 50/50 breastmilk/formula. I've definitely noticed less poopy diapers as the formula has increased. In fact, he didn't poop yesterday at all, but he's certainly working on it now. ;)

We also add gas drops to a couple bottles per day, to help ease his rumbly tummy.

  • I EP so LO gets mainly BM with 1 bottle of formula at night due to low supply. I can't speak to an adjustment period but he takes both equally well and doesn't seem to mind.

  • I've FF both of my sons now and pooping is a once/day occurrance for both of them.  For the most part.  LO#1 occasionally would go 3-4 days without a poop, but the doc wasn't concerned too much at that point.  You can "help" them out by sticking a thermometer up there once they go too long.  But, if LO doesn't seem uncomfortable, I wouldn't sweat it too much until it's been 4 days or so.

  • I ff and I get one poop a day sometimes she'll go 2 days without one but doc says don't worry unless she seems uncomfortable
  • I switched to FF because of food intolerance issues.  She probably averages about 2 poops per day.  She's on Enfamil Nutramigen, which makes it a little looser per my pedi.   From what I've heard, less regular poops are pretty normal.  I wouldn't sweat it unless your baby seems uncomfortable or doesn't go for dayyyyys,

  • DD is on enfamil Gentlease and she usually goes twice a day, sometimes once. When I switched her from newborn to gentlease she didn't poop for a few days, so it could be the transition that's doing it.

Is everyone using the liquid or powder formula? Any thoughts on how old your little one should be before switching to the powder mix?

I tried looking online for recommendations but couldn't find any info. All I could find was warnings about using clean water and the correct ratio when mixing the powder.
  • We gradually switched from BF to supplementing to now mostly formula with 1-2 BM bottles a day. Our LO goes way more than he ever did when I was BF. Hes at at least 2-3 times a day. Somedays he might only go once on occasion but its massive if that happens:)

@buckleyk  I am using liquid, the recommended age is to do liquid until 3 months. This is due to the past problems with finding not so great stuff in the powder and there were some infant deaths due to it. This info came to me at the hospital, my girlfriend who is head nurse in L&D
  • Supplementing for about three weeks now... She poos once a day, and it can be a little struggle for her. If she is acting constipated I will give her straight breastmilk and she will poop within 30minutes.
If you really need to relieve constipation, I put Vaseline on the tip of a nasal aspirator, which I put some Luke warm water in... And squeeze a little up her toosh. This acts as an enema. Don't let your LO rely on it to pass a bowel movement, though. And do keep in mind that constant enemas can flush out natural bowel bacterias that help in the aid of cleansing her pipes
