Our new house is already wired for security from the previous owners. We live in a "safe" area, but it's the very edge/furthest end of the suburb-type spaces about 40 minutes from the city. It's a kind of rural-ish area with spread out houses, subdivisions here and there, and there are woods behind our house and some open areas nearby. DH is gone a lot until late and we have a walk-out basement and lots of other doors/windows.
I think we should arm the system. DH thinks it's ridiculous and unnecessary. We've never had a system before and DH hardly even worries about locking doors, whereas I am more cautious. I think anything can happen anywhere and we don't have close neighbors on all sides (we're in a subdivision with larger lots). DH thinks that with the kids, we'll have all kinds of false alarms and it will be a big hassle all the time, on top of being what he thinks is an unnecessary expense. I am not 100% sure on whether it's worth it or not so would love opinions/experiences. Maybe he's right and it would be a big hassle? Would we really be "safer?"
Do you have a system? Do you like it? REcommend it? We're wired by ADT. We don't have a dog. TIA.
Re: Security Systems: Repost from SAHM
Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12
Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck. Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
This Cluttered Life
We mostly got it for piece of mind now that we have a child.
However, in the current house, I found myself feeling very unsettled when MH went away. So, we decided to have the system installed & we use it every night & I set it in the AM when we go away/to work. It also comes w/ a fire alarm that is wired to the company which was set off by my turkey drippings on T-giving and I got a call from the company and it was embarrassing but I really like that feature b/c if a fire occurs when you're not home, unless a neighbor sees something, it would likely be too late for anything to be done.
I like having it when I'm alone & also when we're out during the day (the city we lived in before had a rash of burglaries during the weekdays for awhile where ppl would ring the doorbell & if no one answered, they'd kick teh door in to get in). However, unless you are prepared to wire every single window, etc, technically ppl can still get in w/out tripping it if they know what they're doing. So you also will want to understand what parts of your house are actually wired before you activate.
and we had our first false alarm this morning when DS tried to go into the garage to get something from my car, though i got down to disarm it before it called the company.
