Babysitters

So, MH and I are going out tomorrow night for a few hours to celebrate my birthday. It will be the 1st time we've left B with anyone but family.

My question is...what is the going rate for babysitters now-a-days? I know it can differ from place to place and so on, but Im looking for an average. I dont want to be cheap, by any means, but I dont want to overpay either.

Thanks, ladies!

  • We usually give our sitter $40. It averages around $8 to $10 an hour. Sometimes she may only be there for 3 hours so closer to $13 but other times she may be there 5 or 6 hrs so then it is a little less per hour but in the end it all evens out. It is my niece and often says she doesn't want anything.

  • We haven't paid a babysitter, but I did have a mother's helper over the summer, a local high school student, and we paid her $8 an hour. We're in the Chicago suburbs .

  • I think it depends... How much notice, how old/experienced they are, how late they stay, whether it's someone you know, the area you live in, whether LO will be asleep the whole te and the babysitter will just watch tv...

I usually pay 15ish per hour and feed them dinner (pizza, etc). I pay extra if I'm not home exactly when I say I will be. However... I've only left LO twice and my older kids were home. I tend to overpay for babysitters though.
  • Thanks everyone. Id rather overpay than underpay, but I wasnt sure what she might be expecting.

  • Care.com has a rate calculator that gives you an idea for your area.  Obviously age/experience can change it, but it can tell you roughly what the going rate is.

^Whoa, welcome back @blueyed228! Haven't seen that name in a long time!

We haven't paid for a babysitter yet, but my guess would be around $10/hr. I think like PP said, it would depend on time of day, if LO was up the whole time, etc.
    Ive been busy ;)

  • Thank you so much for all the advice!

We ended up going with $10/hr for 4 hours. 2.5 of those hours B was sleeping, but she still put him down and made sure he was okay and that is important to me.
