Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Can my 9 month old be ready for 1 nap?

B has been a great napper for the last couple months. Two 1.5 hour naps a day, putting himself to sleep no problem.

In the past couple of days he's been flipping out at his afternoon nap, but still sleeping in the morning no problem. He still stays up til the same time at night and nighttime sleep has not changed.

Could it be that he wants one nap?? I thought most kids waited until at least 12-15 months for that!

Re: Can my 9 month old be ready for 1 nap?

  • Not sure, but I feel like my almost 9 mo is trying to lose the second nap already too. We can still usually manage two a day on weekends, but at daycare she only took one most days this past week. And she's actually been going to bed later at night at the same time. Not sure if it's a phase or if this is the new norm.

  • It's on the early side but not unheard of. Somedays we do 2 naps, other times 3... Just go with the flow
  • My LO went to 1 nap at 7 months. Perhaps!

  • My first, dd was down to one nap by 9 months. She also stopped napping all together at 22 months. She's almost 3 now and she will nap maybe once a week if it's been a busy day.

Mine has refused his second nap for 5 days now. I hope we don't have a similar instance here. UGH!

  • I would keep trying to give it to him for a while since there's a good chance it's just a phase. 9 months is really early for one nap. How much/long is he sleeping at night?
  • He's started sleeping, but only about 45 minutes in the afternoon now.

He still sleeps 8-830 straight with no wake ups overnight.

I'm going to keep at it with his naps because 9 months just seems very young for 1 nap.
  • yes, dd #1 was down to 1 nap at 10mos, and she slept like a champ once we made the transition
  • My first was down to one nap by 9mo but even now at 3.5yo, he naps most days. He's an epically crappy sleeper so he needs the nap.

  • I'm a FTM so I only have experience with my DD who is almost 10 months and she definitely needs two naps a day. I thought transition to one nap didn't occur until later at 15-18 months? but each baby is different so maybe it's possible. If he is well rested and is doing fine then I wouldn't worry about it.
I have to say this though, when DD was 6 months old we thought for sure she was ready to go from 3 to 2 naps because she was refusing the 3rd nap for a few days but then she went back to taking the 3rd nap for another few weeks before she finally dropped it. So I wouldn't jump to conclusion that LO is ready to go to one nap if he has refused the morning nap a few times only..
  • My daughter was down to 1 nap by 9 months for certain.  She was already crawling and cruising and started walking at 9 1/2 months.  Eager little beaver!  My 2nd kiddo was not ready to lose his 2nd nap for ages; probably not 'till around 13-14m.  My 6m old is still taking 2 but I have a feeling he will drop down to one swiftly.  As long as they get enough sleep to be healthy and happy it's certainly easier once they drop down to 1!

  • DD1 went to one nap at 10 mo. She still sleeps anywhere from 2-3.5 hrs.

  • I thinks that's way to early to drop the second nap but maybe he's not ready to nap like he used to.  Can you push the nap later 30mins?  Maybe he would be a little more tired and go to bed easier?

Other reason could be he is TOO tired.  If later doesn't work maybe try 15 mins earlier and see if that helps.  Naps are always such a doozie.

  • my first dd dropped to 1nap at 10mos. 2nd dd is 9mos, and showing signs of dropping. Sometimes, theres not much you can do, just follow his lead.
  • I kind of let her dictate if she wants to sleep or not. I can tell when she needs a nap. Whiny and fussy.
