Acid reflux

Just looking for some input from other moms who have babies with acid reflux, we had to start our son on meds last Monday and they put him on the liquid Zantac and I feel
Like it is not working for him and don't feel like he is getting better. We have an appointment Wednesday for his 1 month and I plan to ask the doctor about the meds, but I think he might also have some sort of milk allergy too, he has been really fussy and gassy and will cry and wake himself up when sleeping, is anyone else experiencing this? What formulas are you using if so? We have been on similac sensative for 2 weeks and has not worked so we are going to give the soy a try.

Re: Acid reflux

  • Hey there. Let me start by saying that our son apparently has a severe case of reflux. He was on zantac but it did nothing for him. He was switched to another med not sure what the brand name is called but its a different h2 blocker. He has milk and soy sensitivity and was put on similac alimentum. We are seeing a GI specialist Thursday. He was throwing up after every feed. He screams when eating and is so miserable. He also was not gaining enough weight. I would definitely talk to your pediatrician. They will likely want to test the stool for blood if they suspect milk allergy.

  • I'm bf'ing, so I can't comment on what formula to use. But I did cut all dairy and soy from my diet.

We also have LO on Zantac, colic drops (probiotic) and we are doing infant massage for reflux and I've been taking her to the chiropractor. I think it's all helping. Good luck!
IVF, acupuncture, meditation and a miracle.

DS has reflux. Zantac has helped him, but we did have to increase the dose shortly after starting. We were EBF and I cut dairy and citrus from my diet to no avail. The pedi felt he could have any other number of allergies: soy, nuts, eggs, wheat, etc. for now he's on Neocate (a hypoallergenic formula). It's helped him tremendously. One drawback is it's extremely costly. A one month supply is going to cost us over $300. We weren't able to find any pharmacy that will accept private insurance so it's all out of pocket.
  • Ask for prevacid. It works better, doesn't have to be increased as they gain weight. Zantac did nothing for us either.

  • We are going through the same thing. My twins were put on soy on Monday after having pretty much the same symptoms your described. The soy made things MUCH worse. They stopped spitting up but could not use the bathroom. They have being screaming for days. They put them on nutramigen today and both had a bm and have calmed down so much. They are both also on Zantac too.

Yes it does.  The dosage is weight dependent.  If the doc is not increasing the dose as the child's weight increases, then the doc is weaning your child off the med.

  • My DD also has reflux. We started her on Prevacid 2 weeks ago. She still screams after feedings and for a few hours a day. Sigh. I'm going to ask if there's a stronger dose! She's EBF so I can't answer your formula Q.

Reflux babies are so tough. My patience is really being tested! Mamas, how are your SO/DHs bonding with your LOs with all the reflux screaming? My DH has not bonded at all with our bitty girl.

Our DS1 was the one with reflux and he bonded because he knew how much compassion he should be showing toward a very innocent baby in pain through no fault of their own.
Also, we took turns getting out of the house and away from the screaming.

  • Well said. And this is the reason I've bonded so deeply with our baby. She's in more discomfort than we are having to listen to her screaming. DH is the best daddy ever to our toddler but can't get past the screaming / not being able to soothe her. I'm impressed with your guy's level of empathy; lucky you and lucky baby.
