Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Causes of toddler diarrhea

Our son has had some issues with diarrhea lately.  He usually poops once at night normal, then a second time that's more diarrhea-like.  We are trying to give him more bananas and try to eliminate a few things from his diet one at a time to see if we can figure out if it's a food item causing the issue.  He is very picky with what he'll eat, so he doesn't really ever eat anything too weird.  Right now we stopped giving him whole milk AM and PM and so far so good.  Maybe it's something with the milk?  Anyone else have issues with whole milk and tried some other kind of milk like soy?

Re: Causes of toddler diarrhea

  • DS had terrible diarrhea and stomach pain from milk. We did soy until he was 3, he are loads of cheese and yogurt, so he only had 1 cup a day.

  • So it's runny once/day? Am I understanding that correctly?

Diarrhea is at least 3 runny poops within 3 hours. I honestly wouldn't be worried about one runny poop/day though it would suck being in the MOTN. My kid never poops at night unless he's got a tummy bug.
  • I don't think he's in any type of pain at all.  Yes, it's one runny poop most nights.  It just doesn't seem normal to me to be that watery.  He is our first child and I haven't been around babies too much, so I'm not really sure what "normal" is.
  • My DS has 3-4 super messy gross diapers each day. This has been going on for months. We have tried eliminating things, but it didn't seem to help. He has an appt on Monday morning to start the process of figuring out what is going on, because something is not right with him. From others who have been down this road, I'm expecting a referral to a GI doctor or an allergist, but we'll see what the pedi says first. If it were one per day, I wouldn't be as concerned, but at the rate my son is going we know there is something off with him. He also has mucous in his poop, which usually points to an allergy.

  • My DS has been having similar issues.  He usually goes 2- 3 times per day and it's not always watery but it's super loose and causing almost constant diaper rash.  We tried soy milk instead and he had a terrible reaction.  He had a rash breakout and his diarrhea got worse for like a week.  We have tried eliminating all soy from his diet but that hasn't helped really.  He had an endoscopy two weeks ago and they didn't see any reason for the issues.  He is going to an allergist next week.

The pedi said some toddlers just have toddler diarrhea but most of the foods that are likely culprits of it we mostly avoid.  He doesn't seem super upset about so who knows.  Sorry I couldn't be more helpful but at least you know you aren't alone!
