Help with pumping

So as far as I can tell bfing is going fine, he is gaining weight and acting satisfied. I started pumping last week and have been so discouraged that I have only tried twice this week. I can't even get 1 ml in 20 minutes on one breast. What I've been doing is bfing on one side while pumping the other since they seem to be in synch with letting down. I need to have milk to leave him with others very soon! Advice? Tips?

I've been pumping once a day an hour after her first morning (around sunrise) feeding. I pump both breasts and combine the two. It's usually 2.5-3.5 oz. I pump for about 10-15 min. Hope this helps. GL!

1 ml?! Are you sure you don't mean 1 oz?

I tried the electirc pump and it took too long or didn't dispense enough milk. I went out and bought the medela manual pump and I easily get 3 oz out of one side in about five minutes. It maybe worth a try. I've been pumping only Manuel now and it's working out much better for me.

This! I have the same pump and it's nothing for me to get 3oz in 5-10mins. That's after she eats too.

  • Yah only 1ml ! Like a couple tablespoons! I have the medela double electric pump . I would of never thought a manual pump over electric . Ugh ! I'll try your suggestions, thank you ladies
  • Two tablespoons equals one fluid ounce. One tablespoon equals roughly 15ml. If you are only pumping 1ml, that is like a drop of milk. If you are pumping a few tablespoons, you are likely getting close to an ounce. Keep feeding and pumping. This will help increase your supply.
Can't figure out the signature thing, so here's the short, short version.....first daughter born on November 10, 2013. She was conceived through the magic of IVF after 2+ years of TTC.
  • I find pumping to be extremely difficult as well (I do have an overall low supply).  I found this video helpful as to maximizing my pumping sessions.

    Good luck!
  • I suggest pumping after you feed once or twice a day. It will trigger your body to make more milk then and after a few days you should see a difference. I started this when LO turned 3 weeks and now my morning pumping session I can get up to 6 oz. I also block feed at night and use the manual on the other breast at night. I can get 2-5 oz out of that feeding also.
