Best excuses for not drinking

Please give me your best excuses for not drinking. My husband's company Christmas party is tonight at a winery. Also our families have a lot of beer/wine available at holidays and I would typically be drinking it! Is it inevitable that we will just end up telling close family/them guessing after repeatedly not consuming alcohol?

  • Some people use the excuse that they're on antibiotics. You can say you just started Atkins, lol, but then you would have to not eat bread or pasta. I am going to try to trick people tonight by getting cranberry juice with a lime.

  • I go to the bathroom and fill up a beer bottle with water. I keep it in a zip up coozie so I don't accidentally get it mixed up with someone else's. I'm always thirsty and love water so it works for me. This has only worked when drinking at someone's house though, I haven't been out to a restaurant/winery yet.

  • 1. Wine- claim it gives you a migraine. (red wine really does give me one.)
    2. House party- "bring your own". Do you have a shaker? Put Cranberry juice and sprite into it, and just pour it as you go.
    3. House party- If someone gives you a beer, you can easily pretend to take a drink of it and spit it back in. Go to the bathroom and dump it, rinse it, and fill it with sink water.
    4. Bring a flask.... of Sprite ;) Pour a "mixer" into a glass, then pour your flask into it.
    5. Don't want to play fake drinking? Just drink juice and say you have a headache/have to be up early in the AM. OR pretend you got super drunk a couple nights ago and you can't even imagine drinking again at the moment.

Just remember that it is 100x more noticeable to yourself that you're not drinking than it will be to anyone else.

  • This is exactly what I've been wondering myself, especially with all the Christmas parties happening right now! In November, it was easy to tell people I was "taking a month off" with the excess of Christmas season coming up but it's getting more and more difficult because I've always been an enthusiastic drinker and would normally socialize over drinks in bars/restaurants. The antibiotics thing is a flimsy excuse, because most people I know who drink, will drink while on antibiotics (we're a drinking crowd, I guess). I've had to tell people I'm taking a break from alcohol, with a slightly serious look on my face and quickly change the subject so then they kind of suspect I've done something I regret and am paying my penance (I don't mind letting them think that for now!)
In most situations, if I just carry around a drink and get involved in the party, no one notices that I'm a Sober Sally, although it can get pretty boring when everyone is guzzling the end of year cheer away and I'm looking at my watch wondering when I can be reunited with my bed...

  • I have been wondering this as well.  I don't consider myself a hard drinker, but every single time I go out to dinner I'll have at least 2 glasses of wine.  Always.

So the whole "oh I'm not feeling well" or "red wine gives me a migraine" won't work with close friends.  It might for a get together or two, but it won't fly for 3 months.

Already worried about coming up with an excuse and we're not even pregnant yet :(

  • You do realize its completely ok to drink a small glass of wine when pregnant.  It's not acceptable to get drunk or even tipsy when pregnant but a small glass is fine- in fact some studies support its even healthy.  If you're not interested in that I see you have a 1 year old, just say that lately he's been coming into bed with you in the middle of the night or is waking up in the middle of the night and you need to stay sober.
