Babies: 3 - 6 Months

window of wakefulness for 5ish month old

What is your LOs window of wake time? Does it change throughout the day? Longer or shorter as the day goes on?

I always feel like I'm trying too soon or too late to put DD down for naps. I rarely ever hit that just right moment.

Re: window of wakefulness for 5ish month old

  • I know exactly how you feel. Grateful however that I seem to be hitting the mark better now that DS is nearly 6m.

It's not much different now, than it was a month ago at 5m but I will tell you this, the wake period in the morning after wake for the day is short - 1.5-2 hours max. We are at 1h45m till first nap- no complaints. Then it gets longer as the day goes on. Longest wake period is 3 -3.5 hours before bed.

    Hope that helps.

  • DD usually stays awake about 2 hours before needing a nap - at the end of the day she usually doesn't want to nap so may go a little longer before bed
  • My LO just turned 5 months and takes 3 naps per day. She gets up around 7 am, naps around 9:30-10 am (30 minute nap). Around noon, she sleeps for another 30-45 minutes. At 2 pm, she takes a 2+ hour nap and stays up until bedtime around 7:30 pm. I'm ready for her to combine the first two naps into a longer one but she just can't seem to stay asleep during that time. She doesn't want to miss anything I guess!

  • unfortunately that continues until 7-8 months (timing issues). At 5 months we were at 2 naps but during 6 months she briefly went back to 3 (I couldn't get the timing either) and by 7 we were back to 2 naps, each roughly the same time each day.

I would say we were at 2-3 hours of awake time, with maybe a longer stretch at the end (3.5).

  • My son is 6 months and can stay awake 1.5- 1hr 45mins. The first nap of the morning is usually right at the 1.5 hr mark and has been lasting around 1-1.5 hours. The rest of the day it is short naps averaging 30-45mins. Getting the timing just right is definitely key and can easily be missed. I know we can all relate to that for sure!
