Interested in some of you brilliant ladies take on this. Personally I have a rule about not getting or giving vaccines to my kids that haven't been around for at least ten years, because of things like this. (i think gardasil is approaching that if not already passed it) I'm always skeptical about anything before I see enough evidence to back it up.

What say you bump researchers?

Re: HPV vaccinations

  • But this article ( and I'm not sayin that its correct) states that the vaccine has actually not been proven to protect against it.

I definitely think no matter what, always do your own research. I also know that things around longer than when they are released. However I want to see a long line of humans with no reaction before I trust it completely.

  • Having had cervical cancer I would recommend everyone get this vaccine. My HPV was dormant for years and I had no idea I had it until a few months before the precancer cells showed up. In treating those my full blown cancer was discovered.

No real thoughts on the article but your 10 year rule is something my dad pretty much followed. He was a doctor and when we were kids, the only meds we got were tried and true. We never took anything new because research turn around doesn't typically allow time for the long term side effects to become clear. Better safe than sorry. I'm still the same way, plus, the older meds are usually way more affordable.

  • Both of those articles take things really out if context. The vaccine developer in question has come out several times on record and said she was taken out of context and she supports hpv vaccination.

My thought on the HPV vaccine is that it is still relatively new.  But I don't care, because it's not a vaccine my daughter will get as a baby -- one she will get later (age 9-13 probably), so we still have a little more time for further testing.  We have 10 years from now to figure it out.

I was pretty much going to type the same thing. By the time DD is slated to receive try vaccine, there will be (I assume) tons more research to consider. I'll hold my opinions until then (although, having had one of the bad strains of HPV that caused some pretty aggressive precancerous cell growth, my current gut reaction is to vaccinate).

  • So not exactly what we're talking about but did you know 75% of girls in my age group (early 20's) have been exposed to HPV?! It blew my mind when my dr told me
  • I definitely don't think the article is a well researched scientific article. I had a pretty bad strain of HPV myself with a lot of pre-cancerous cells being biopsied. I know it's a long way off before I have to make this decision (or ever) but when I read this I was interested in others opinions and reactions. Thanks ladies! Ill be putting it on the back burner until the time comes- then do a hell of a lot of research...and probably ask Internet strangers their opinions :)

  • I will not let my girls get this vaccine until there are more unbiased research done on this vaccine. There are law suits going on in Europe over side effects young girls were having. Just about every site out there has an agenda and a bias on this vaccine whether pro or anti. I feel I cannot trust any of it as of right now. Just my opinion.

  • I had it after I was already in a monogamous relationship. I had no issues.

By the time our girls are of age to get it we should know more about it's safety and efficacy.
  • Meh. I had to be vaccinated 5x because planned parenthood ran out...
3 years ago dr re-did the series. Already had a dangerous strain, so it really never helped. There has been research that says if you have already been exposed, vaccinating might aggravate it. Not sure either way.
I ended up with 4 colpos and 2 leeps. DH and I do not want our daughter vaccinated with the conflicted info out that is out there now. It might change in the next 10 years, who knows.
  • Coming in late to this, but a few people have mentioned getting it for your daughters - remember that the HPV vaccine is now approved and recommended for boys, too! I'll definitely be getting both of my sons the vaccine when it's recommended for them.

  • I'm vaccinated and I will definitely vaccinate my child, whether it's a girl OR a boy.

That article is scare mongering taken out of context.

  • I have had the vaccine and will get it for my daughter before she is a teenager.

There wouldn't be all of this "controversy" about Gardasil if it weren't for the viruses being sexually transmitted. Legislators are only getting all upset because getting it means that you expect the receiver to be sexually active one day.

Definitely agree. **SO SICK of the misinformation going out about all sorts of vaccines, not just this one!!**

My son will be getting vaccinated.

Do you mean homeopathic supplements? Because THOSE are unregulated and scary, but generics are subject to the same testing as name brands and are often made in the same facilities.

As someone who has had rapidly progressing severe dysplasia and gone through colposcopies and a LEEP to finally be in he clear- I would have pretty much done anything to prevent getting HPV. I didn't have that option. We, as new mothers, have the luxury of waiting a few years and seeing more research done before this even becomes an issue for our kids.

That being said- has anyone thought if getting their son the guardisil vaccine?
I'm having a boy and I would want to protect him as much as I would a daughter. Just curious why the onus is in the girl to get the vaccine when it takes 2 to tango- so to speak. Men can suffer from HPV side effects just like women.

Excellent point! Recommendations have come out to vaccinate boys as well.

Just to add to the boy recommendation: A woman I used to work with had her youngest son go away to college last year. That being said, one of the mandatory vaccinations, before entering his college of choice, was the HPV vaccination.
  • I'm pretty pro vaccine, I've beaten my head against the anti vaccine loony wall more than my fair share of times, but committing now to a vaccine my daughter won't get for almost a decade seems silly. When the time comes to get this vaccine I'll review the current science and recommendations and then decide if we'll get it.

    generics /=/ homeopathic or herbs

Actual generics, I agree pass the same testing and literally are the same thing - the same science, the same compound.

Thanks for not making me preach. I work for a generic pharmaceutical manufacture and have worked for name brand pharma. Generics are held to the same standards as name brand. The reason they are less expensive is because they don't have to go through the development and clinical trials as the name brands. The development of the drugs is why they cost so much. (Guess I ended up preaching)
