Shoes

What kind of shoes are your LO's wearing? I have one friend that makes me feel like crap about it saying that emma's feet are going to go square and flat and never fit in a shoe because i dont make her wear them daily. We are in FL so it is in the 80's  and i just dont feel it is necessary if she isnt walking everywhere. Is she right? Are my babies feet going to go all cave man? I think its a silly thing to say and since her feet aren't even considered "wide" i am not worried. But i guess i need to invest in infant shoes. I am just so picky about matching!

Re: Shoes

  • R wears Robeez. They are the soft bottomed kind. Once she starts walking we will probably get ones with harder, more durable bottoms.

  • E walks just fine in them when she does have them on..It isn't a transition or anything. Maybe im crazy for not being concerned.

I don't think you're crazy. I have actually heard that soft bottomed shoes are better because it lets their feet go at a natural angle and footfall which is better for them. The robeez just don't seem good for outside type walking. We will see when she starts walking.

I think I've read that it's better for them to learn to walk in shoes with minimal soles/barefoot. Is your friend an anthropologist? If not I wouldn't put much stock in what he/she says...
yea, I don't. It is just getting annoying, lol! I had never heard such a silly thing. She says she knows someone who had it happen. I think maybe that little girl just had flat square feet. I dont see how that is shoe related.

@beane4018 I think you were auto corrected, Orthopedic deals with feet :D But anthropologist gave me such a chuckle.

@lyndsihutson This is from the American Academy of Pediatrics and I would trust them a lot more than your friend.  https://patiented.aap.org/content2.aspx?aid=6900&refURL=

@persephonerose no I was thinking anthropologist because of the cave man reference and thinking that people wore pretty minimal shoes for many years. But an orthopedist would probably be a better bet ;-)
True true. But there is now a whole movement towards going barefoot especially for exercising because studies have shown that it helps build stronger foot, ankle, and legs.

  • N is in grippy socks at home.
He has light weight shoes (that grandma bought) for when we go out.
But if we are shopping, he's in a cart. If we're at a restaurant, he's in a high chair. And if we are visiting someone, he is sock footed.

Grandma bought boots for the winter too, but he hasn't worn them yet.
I don't foresee him walking well in clunky boots.

In the Spring when he has mastered walking we will decide on outdoor footwear then. But for now, indoors, it's barefoot or sock foot.
(And I don't care how much grandma disagrees)
  • We let her go barefoot whenever possible. It's best for them to learn how to walk properly and from our chiropractor's perspective, shoes can throw your body out of alignment if they aren't the right fit/kind.

O has some Pedipeds and Striderite soft rubber bottom shoes that she wears if we are out at a place she'll be walking. At DC she is barefoot. She'll pull them off anyway if I did try to have her wear them there.

Bottom line, your friend is wrong. Just tell her you appreciate her trying to help, but you'll parent your child according to your own research.

  • Also, I'm impressed at all of you who's children will leave socks on! O will not have it.

FMIL's BF bought these for DS. He is walking very well in them despite them being so chunky.

He wears just socks at home, and he goes barefoot at the different sitters' houses which have hardwood or tile.

  • According to my pedi, your friend's advice is off....if that makes you feel any better.

Some anthropologists study the evolution of bipedalism. There is a guy at Harvard who is really passionate about barefoot running and shows up on pbs debating whether shoes are healthy addition to the human toolkit. There are probably people on the other side of that debate. Given their passionate plea, I could see how someone might think your friend was an anthropologist.

All of our lo's shoes have been used, so far. She wears them when we are outside. We have a pair of sneakers and a pair of boots. She is barefoot most of the time, though she will sometimes wear these $3 slippers we found in the drugstore. They are glorified slipper socks.

Her feet will be as wide or as square as they will be. If her shoes do not conform to her foot, she'll end up with deformities - not the other way around. At least, that is how I understand this process to work.
  • Lo has a pair of sneakers from stride rite that are suppose to be similar to being barefoot.  She walks great in them, and wears them while at daycare.

  • E has a bunch of shoes in different colors (from stride rite) when we go outside, but while we are inside she has "slippers" we put on her, which are just socks that have rubber bottoms so she doesn't slide around on the tile floors and plus it's cold and snowing.

  • We have soft soled Robeez or Pedipeds that she wears to daycare, where they promptly come off unless they are outside playing. Everywhere else socks or barefoot, because socks are removed 90% of the time.
