Acupuncture

I admit I'm a pretty traditional western medicine kind of gal. I know some of you (@kc1212 and @mrscastillo) do acupuncture so I decided to google fertility acupuncture in my area, which just led to a 30min informative conversation with woman at a local clinic who sounds awesome! Why does it have to be so dang expensive?! Gah. And how am I going to convince my western MD hubs that it would be beneficial?!

Two DDs 10/08 and 08/10, no primary IF
TTC #3 since 10/2011 - dx unexplained/weak ovulation
 3 BFN clomid + TI cycles, 5 BFN clomid/gonal f IUIs, 1 mmc IUI
2/19/2014 IVF #1 Unexpected low E2 (oversuppressed) -> increased to max doses = 3 or 4 follicles, converting to IUI
BFFP Saw 1 beautiful heartbeat at 6w6d, follow up u/s at 9w showed mmc. Eff this.
NTNP 5/2014-9/2014, OPKs and TI 10/2014 - 1/2015.
RPL testing all normal, AFC, AMH, and FSH all normal.
IVF 1.2 1/22/2014 natural cycle start, AFC 28, 300 gonal f/150menopur.
ER 2/3/15 14R 8M 3F w/ICSI Day 5 transfer on 2/8/15 of one "Grade A+" blast and have TWO frosties!

Re: Acupuncture

  • I wish I could convince myself that acupuncture is good for me, but all I think of when I hear acupuncture is...  :-SS   :-SS

  • My RE encouraged me to do it.  That was a big plus when asking DH for his blessing to spend the $$$.  How much is that lady you talked to and how often does she want you to go?  You might want to call a couple places before you decide.  Also, since it's an ongoing treatment (as apposed to going 5 times and being done like most of their patients), you should ask for a discount if you pay up front.  My Dr was $50 per visit and I went once a week.  He upped the price at the new year, but kept my price the same because I was an ongoing patient.  He would also give people a 10% discount if they paid for 6 treatments at once.  I had a friend who drove into LA and would pay $150/visit,  I thought that was way too high!  I live in a Los Angeles suburb, so its cheaper near me.

Of course they have they expenses to stay in business, and you are paying for their expertise.  But, because of the nature of their service, they actually have some flexibility in their prices.  If you are really committed to going for it, you should be able to negotiate.

  • There are some studies *i think* (not articles) that suggest a higher success rate of IVF with acupuncture.

My argument to skeptics is that it is an ANCIENT practice and we don't know or need to know the WHY behind things. 24/7.

Also there are acupuncture clinics that deal with nothing but IF sadly I live in bumfuck and no such clinc is even near me. But if you live in a bigger city...

Also - there are many instances of western / American doctors that CONVERT to eastern medicine that is the best scenario IMO because they have an MD behind them.

Also- if nothing else it is RELAXING as hell.

It is expensive but I've just come to terms with the fact that I don't get pregnant for free.

  • @KC1212, that's kind of nice to hear that your area doesn't have a clinic that has a fertility specializing acupuncturist. The only one in my town is located in some pain clinic of western medicine doctors and then the one acupuncturist. I haven't worked up the nerve to call a pain institute and ask if one of the doctors treats fertility issues. I'm a pansy.

  • Thanks ladies! I think I will definitely add this to the mix if/when we get to our IVF cycle, most likely February. She's $63-$81/session, so it might be an every other week type of thing. I wish I had money coming out of my ears, but alas, that just isn't the case.

  • I swear acu is how I got pregnant naturally. I have no other explanation for it. I was going every other week for five cycles before I got my BFP. I paid $60/each session.

It was very relaxing and not painful at all!

I would love to go again, but we currently live in Germany and I have a two year old, so I would first need a sitter (expensive if I want to go on a regular basis) AND speak enough German to communicate with the practitioner, and I don't have either.

    I say go for it.

  • I did acu and got DS1... I've been doing acu since March for #2 with no luck BUT apparently I ovulate on CD12 without acu, with acu I O after CD14.  I have crappy eggs, so they need time to cook, the 2 days makes a huge difference.  There really is something to acu... Infertility Cure and Making Babies are good books to read that address it.
