Pain after GBS test?

I had my Group B Strep test this morning. Not a big deal, but I was surprised that it really hurt--a LOT. She barely inserted the swab, maybe a half-inch or so? Took two seconds, but it truly seriously hurt my vag. She noticed I flinched and asked if I was feeling sensitive, I said I guess so, and that was it.

Well, for the rest of today, I've been pissing razor blades. It's not even so much the peeing that hurts, it's like the act of relaxing my pelvic muscles to start the flow of urine, feels like someone is slicing my vag open with a knife. How on earth could that little swab have done so much damage? I literally just cried real tears on the toilet trying to pee.

The only thing I can think of is that I shaved the area a little this morning in the shower. I used a fresh razor and didn't even come close to going fully bald, I just took a few passes to make it slightly less Amazon down there. Didn't feel any pain when peeing after that or when giving my urine sample at the doc. But maybe I nicked myself and the swab opened it up or otherwise irritated it? UGH, it really seriously hurts.

Re: Pain after GBS test?

  • They must have done my wrong. Well, they did it when my water broke almost a month ago but nothing was inserted. I would think it kind of "re-organized" things down there temporarily. Sometimes after a pelvic I have felt that way.

I know that isn't super helpful. I would call tomorrow if it isn't better and I'm sorry. I know how bad that hurts due to kidney stones during my pregnancy and infection.

  • Hmmm... I don't have my Strep B test until Monday, so I can't be of much help there, but the pain you describe is similar to the pain I had when I had a very mild yeast infection. I had NO other symptoms, but my OB did a swab and it came back positive for a yeast infection. Maybe it is just a coincidence that you had the Strep B test today?

  • Mine was surprisingly very painless (although I think he swabbed my rectum area?)
He was very quick about it and it didn't even feel like he inserted it.
    Hope your pain goes away.

  • Thanks all. I was wondering if it was a coincidence but I just feel like it would be way too much of one. I peed at least four times this morning with zero discomfort, including twice after shaving. Then I had the test, it hurt a lot, and have been having the pain with urination ever since. I'm going to go with my theory that I nicked myself while shaving and she somehow irritated it with the swab. :( If it doesn't go away by tomorrow I guess I will call, in the meantime I'm just a pregnant lady who can barely pee. Not looking forward to going to bed, since I usually pee a half dozen times a night! Ughgh. :(

  • My OB told me that I could use diaper rash cream, as this would keep the area dry and therefore it would be less irritated. Hope you feel better tomorrow!

  • Mine hurt my B hind this time around. Last time, I didn't notice. She also is a very painful cervical check and I cringed and yelped I guess you can say....she wasn't gentle at all. Very quick, but ouch! Wasn't like this with DS.

  • Google has revealed to me multiple posts like mine on various boards over the years; women complaining about painful urination immediately after the test, and the other ladies responding that it wasn't like that for them and that's about all I can find. Sigh. Just peed again and it still was still awful. I guess I can only conclude that some rare women have pain after the test for some weird reason, and hope it goes away. Blerrrgg!

  • I had a cervix check a couple of weeks ago, and I swear the attending scratched me. I almost thought I had a yeast infection because of the pain/discomfort, but knew I didn't, since they were just in there looking around! It took about 24-36 hours, and whatever she scratched, healed up, and went away. So maybe the swab irritated you? I'd definitely call if you aren't feeling better tomorrow! Feel better!

Dear god. It's official, I've transformed into Evelyn Couch (aka Kathy Bates from Fried Green Tomatoes).

"I can't even look at my own vagina!"

Looking with a mirror = FAIL. I can't see past my bump, and when I stood up to try another angle all I did was block all the light so I still couldn't see.

A total eclipse of the vag.

I feel ya, girl. I think you posted once about being a bigger girl, and I am too. I had a hard time seeing my vag before, and now with a bump it's nearly impossible. This is going to sound so ridiculous, but a couple weeks ago I felt a bump that burned like crazy when I wiped. In order to inspect, I propped myself on some pillows and used my phone to take a picture. I felt like an idiot, but it worked. Might be worth a try?

Also, had my gbs swab this week and it was super uncomfortable, but didn't hurt. I'm going to go with pp and say something got agitated. Hope you get relief!

  • Did she do a cervical check along with the GBS swab?  I literally have never noticed the GBS swab, b/c it's just that... a little cotton swab.  Not quite sure how that could be remotely painful unless there is something else going on down there, like an infection or if it's the actual cervical check that's causing your issues?

Whatever it is, I sure hope you feel better soon!  I'd call your OB b/c painful urination just isn't right/normal at all. GL hun!

  • Hallelujah. The pain seems to be gone. So strange! I'll keep an eye on it and hopefully it was just a weird thing. Feeling around down there my whole vaginal area feels kind of puffy, tight, and extra sensitive--maybe it's just the extra blood flow to the area? Who knows. I'm just happy I was able to pee this morning without shrieking!

  • Hmmmm sounds like some of u have described that the GS hurt. I didn't even feel that she did anything. I hope she swabbed my area enough, ha ha!!! She just swabbed my vag and went towards my rectum. She really didn't insert the cotton tip swab.
  • @MissMeegs

Glad to hear that you aren't in pain this morning!

  • Maybe she shoved it up your pee hole?
